Gift bags are the best.
A great tradition to start is to put the date and name on the outside bottom of the bag; after the person receives his/her bag the gift can be listed, too.
I've been using bags for a long, long time. Less waste to toss out when you recycle back to another person.
Another thing that has disappeared are the people who used to wrap your gifts for you in department stores, for a price, of course.

We were at the mall yesterday, walked into JCP and went over to the escalator to see which floors the departments were located on. Not a directory to be found, so we turned around and left.
Macy's wasn't much better. The only directory they had was on the first floor and it was located at the BOTTOM of the down escalator. The up escalator is located behind the down, not next to it.

Kohl's by me has not given out boxes in about 3 years. I use gift bags which are much easier.

Gift boxes were a staple when I was young and going out Christmas shopping with my family. The clerks would always ask if you needed them. Today, it's like pulling teeth with some stores if you ask for one. I still have an unused Macy's box from a couple of years ago. But that was before gift bags became a thing and the dollar stores popped up. Now, I get all my wrapping supplies at Dollar Tree. I still prefer to wrap my gifts because it looks more like Christmas to me, but boy those bags are a convienence.

Because people would go in and get a load of them for free and then put things they'd purchased elsewhere (in cheaper stores) in the upscale store's box. And when people tried to return things after Christmas there was always hassle, as they had to explain that the item didn't even come from there.
The news item made me laugh because my oldest sister used to do this many years ago - she'd stock up on Filene's or Macy's boxes, then put the most awful things in them, thinking she was fooling anyone.
I used to work at JCP and I have witnessed this. We tried to make it customer friendly by setting up self serve tables on Black Friday, the weekends and big sale days during the holiday season. This was so customers could take the gift boxes they needed without standing in line at customer service and so it would not slow down the check out lines.
However, we stood there at the registers and watched people approach the self serve table and help themselves. They literally walked out of the store with arms full of tall stacks of gift boxes, some of them had made no purchases. We watched the table stacked high with boxes clear off in seconds. It really was ridiculous.
Then, we staffed the table and had an associate pass out the boxes. Still, people just disregarded the clerk, walked up, grabbed a stack of boxes and took off. In the end, we had to resort to keeping what we could under the registers and then send the customers to customer service when we were out. It was just sad that it came to that.
So quite honestly, I can understand the retail decision to discontinue free gift boxes. There is so much in the budget for gift boxes, a certain amount are ordered, and then when they're gone, they're gone. If the stock of gift boxes runs out before Christmas, then customers are upset that they can't get boxes for their presents. If a customer has to stand in a long line for boxes or worse, if they stand in line and then the size they need is gone, they are upset. It's a lose/lose situation really for the store and the customer.

Just another perk that has disappeared. I made the mistake last year of asking for gift boxes at the JCP checkout for the many gift and $$ spent. Well, you would have thought I was from mars and had 3 eyes! lol Clerk responsed in a nasty tone," we don't give out boxes anymore, where have you been"!
To my suprise, I purchased a gift from the local Macy's this year. and guess what? They actually gave me a box! Sure gift bags are nice, but I love seeing wrapped boxes with bows under the tree every year.

Von Maur will not only give you a box and tissue, they will wrap it for you free of charge. Year round.
Otherwise, I get boxes at the Dollar Store (2 or 3 for $1 depending on size). Some things just don't go well into a gift bag - like clothing. I also save boxes from one year to the next, and reuse them.

90% of what I gift goes in a Kringle Express Drawstring Gift Bag that Q sells.
I purchased a set 3 years ago for under $20 and they are still going strong!
My immediate family folds them up after we open and give them right back to me for next year. They store so easily!
I have just a couple HIGH quality boxes still from stores long gone that I save and reuse.
I STINK at wrapping boxes anyhow! Seriously, STINK!
No more $$$ on boxes or wrapping paper or bows! Saving a bundle!
