Have you been peeking under my beds? That's where my family members store the boxes after they have been emptied. We always get a kick out of receiving a gift in a box from a store no longer in business like Marshall Fields or Carson, Pirie, Scott.
YES!!! Or marvel at how decorative the boxes were back then. So many stores now gone....*sigh*

Since their stock is in the toilet, and they are closing more stores, do you really think they care if they give out FREE boxes?

At least you still have a JC Penney. Ours closed a few months ago. The closest one is now 125 miles away.

OMG! When I was growing up you looked forward to Marshall Fields and Carson Pirie Scott to see what the Christmas boxes would be. They were not the foldable type either. A top and a bottom and beautiful design and colors. Times sure have changed. You can always buy a large decorative bag. ![]()

I wonder if Macy's still gives them out. I know they "ran out" last year about this time.
Dollar stores carry these.

The popularity of gift bags probably has a lot to do with the scaling back on boxes.
I prefer using a gift bag whenever possible. They take up less space to store and they are more economical because the container and wrapping are one.

There was an item on one of the daily shows yesterday or the day before that many stores are no longer giving out boxes, especially the more upscale stores.
Because people would go in and get a load of them for free and then put things they'd purchased elsewhere (in cheaper stores) in the upscale store's box. And when people tried to return things after Christmas there was always hassle, as they had to explain that the item didn't even come from there.
The news item made me laugh because my oldest sister used to do this many years ago - she'd stock up on Filene's or Macy's boxes, then put the most awful things in them, thinking she was fooling anyone. ![]()

I can’t even remember the last time I bought a gift in a department store, lol. I do remember that I haven’t purchased a Christmas gift at Penney’s in about 30 years!
I needed to return something after Christmas, that I purchased. And I had my receipt. They wouldn’t refund my money. They were only giving store credit. Even when I explained that it was within 30 days and the purchase wasn’t a gift. Never even considered buying from them again, during the holidays.
And I tossed all of the old gift boxes years ago. We all use gift bags now, and pass them back and forth, year after year.

I think that perk went out years ago. Too bad. Was really nice.
