OMG - thanks for the memories @Daisy Sunflower. I haven't heard that word since I lived at home with my parents before I went away to college. My mom used that word a lot. She's gone now, so you brought back a fun memory of her.
To the OP - this is a great thread!

My dad did, too and that's why I say it.
@Daisy Sunflower, @Pearlee: What's the current word for that? I call it a "heap."

I worked labor and delivery as a nurse and a woman without a husband was "out of wedlock" and the child was "illegitimate" but today, we just don't use labels or she is a single parent or single mom...

Frosting the hair is now highlights
Sorry if this has been mentioned:
girdle = shaper (They cannot fool me, it's still a girdle and I'll never wear one again.)

My grandmother referred to luggage as grips. She too called the sofa a davenport, but my mom called it a Chesterfield. Hi Fi's became stereos. Transister radios became boom boxes and later, Disc man, MP3's and Ipods, Grandma called it the ice box, but my mother called all refrigerators Fridigaires, regardless of brand.

In old detective novels, cheaters were used on the eyes; now they are reading glasses!

I'm not a prude or especially old fashioned, but I still cringe when people use the word "pregnant" in certain situations. I prefer to say "expecting". For instance, one of my students announced that another teacher was pregnant. That sounds so bold and rather rude to my ears. I guess I am old fashioned after all.
