My DH was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers in 2012. He was forced to retire later that year and applied for disability immediately. He was examined by a doctor provided by SS and a few weeks later was accepted. I know there are many that deserve SSDI, and there are many that don't deserve it, but for those of us who have it legitimately, it is a Godsend. I'm so thankful for it. We would be in very poor shape without it.

Sending good thoughts to you and your husband, Pianomama.

The only way you can make it alone (with SSDI) is to get subsidized housing and food stamps. 700-800/month isn't much.

No, it isn't. With housing so expensive, SNAP cuts and Medicare under the gun in order to give the uber-wealthy a tax cut, it doesn't look good for those who are in need.

Like your daughter they could have a chronic condition that is not easily seen. They could have heart disease. They could have a psychiatric issue like posttraumatic stress. There are many possibilities. Certainly there are people who use the system but I would not make an assumption about an individual unless you know all the details of their health. There are a few people in this building who have had knee surgery and scars that show, but they walk fine, don't even have a limp, and they are receiving disability. I don't know much about the whole process, but it doesn't seem fair to me.
I have known these people for over four years and have talked with them. They are on disability because of their knee surgery. I'm not saying they do not deserve to be, but I don't think they should easily get it while individuals like my daughter, who have no visual scars cannot, because they have an "unrecognized disease." If anyone had seen my once beautiful daughter just a couple of years ago and compared her appearance to what it is now, it would be obvious how sick she is. No one ages that fast without being seriously ill.

Psychological problems ARE medical problems. Mental illness is about brain chemistry. It isn't a life "choice" or character flaw.
I had the same thought as you, sciencegeek. But I gave this poster a pass because I did not feel as though she meant it in a derogatory way - merely asking a question in an innocently misinformed way.
Going into my 28th year of working in Mental Health..and the stigma is still there no matter what...

It's a good thing you aren't the arbiter of what's disabled and what isn't. And please cite your source for your comment about the increase in the number of disability checks going to people you don't consider disabled.

I think nearly every system, the government has come up with, can and is being abused. Unemployment benefits are abused. Workman's compensation is abused. Both federal and local welfare is abused. I have found that doctors will do not so ethical things in order to get people benefits. So it is no surprise that SS disability is abused.
I don't feel if you are an able bodied person you should be eligible for disability. Even people with mental issues can work. They choose not to.
There are many people who rightfully deserve benefits and they are the ones harmed by those who abuse the system.
