Becky, you could probably get a cheaper plan with a better phone. If you use your WiFi at home, you won't have to pay extra for internet service.

You're paying a lot for something you really don't even use.

Just my two cents...

Probably if I paid for internet at home but only have it at work and my boss pays for that. Not having access at home saves on impulse shopping/spending and I read about six library books a week at home since I rarely watch television.

Okay. I see.

You might want to look into a pay as you go plan. It would definitely be cheaper than $42 a month.

If you wouldn't mind responding, could you tell me who your provider is for your $60 plan?

We have ATT and haven't heard of that plan at all. I would not be against switching.

That would be nice because I was surprised to see how little I used the phone last month and still had to pay that amount.

Becky,

I posted information on this line about plans that average out to be $3.33 a month. Another is $40 a year.

You might be interested in checking it out.

Becky, I've seen basic flip phones at CVS and even Walgreen's for approximately $20. They have phone cards in different dollar amounts that you can purchase - some as low as $10.

It might suit your needs...

I have a Tracfone Family Value Plan. I pay $9.99 a month for 50 minutes. When my mother was alive it cost me an extra $5.99 a month for her to be on my plan. I've had it since 2011 and have accumulated almost 5000 minutes. I never have to worry about adding airtime, as it does updates automatically every month.

A flip phone is under $15 thru them.

WOW!! Thanks brii.

You're welcome, Becky.

Check into any charges you might incur if you cancel your plan if you are under contract for a specified time.

yes, a cell phone is a top priority and a necessity for me......especially since i have teenagers/young adults AND an aging mom. i want them to have access to me at any time of the day. i also use mine for business.

{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

I'm always shocked when people don't see the obvious.

People had teenagers for generations and aging parents without cell phones, and life went on. CELL PHONES ARE A CONVENIENCE, they are not a necessity. They may make life easier, safer, allow us to do things faster, but the certainly are not in any way, a necessity. Air, water, shelter, food, are necessities for survival. I can think of dozens of other things that are more vital to daily life than cell phones.

People are just becoming so dependent on them, and it has happened in such a relatively short time.

I have a teen, and I appreciate living in a time where we can stay closer in touch because of the technology, but I was a teen when this didn't exist, we just did things differently, but got along just fine. People act like the world is coming to an end when they don't have these electronic gadgets. It's pathetic.

For 99% of the population they are a want, not a need.

Why wouldn't a cell phone be a priority?

I know you don't like them, but they have saved many lives.

And they kept some of us in contact with our loved ones at the hub of 9/11.

If someone can't buy food, pay rent, mortgage or utilities those items obviously come first. Believe me I've been there and you have to look at every penny of your budget. But if you shop around you can get some very cheap cell phone plans. Just because someone is low income it doesn't mean that they are automatically irresponsible if they have a cell phone.

9/11 is how I know very well cell phones are not the be all and end all. I was trying to contact a brother I thought might be in the air that day (travels for business) and an aging mother who I knew was at home seeing the TV broadcasts and freaking out, and I couldn't reach either, as there was no service or very sketchy service most of that day in our area.

We had to resort to the old ways, I drove home to see if mom was alright, and we had to make contact with my brothers wife at home to see if he was in the air or not (gratefully, he wasn't).

Yes, there are plenty of examples where they have saved lives, or given people the last few minutes of life with a loved one, but they have killed as many, with texting and driving, distracted driving, etc.

They are one thing that if they were to vanish today, I'd get used to it and never miss it in a week or so.
