From the OP.

I appreciate your replies and I see your point on emergencies if someone doesn't have a landline.

Perhaps I word things wrong.

I did not mean ALL people should not have cellphones! I mean is it a top priority in the chain of things (like food, shelter, etc).

I assume those of you who have phone "plans" have jobs and or money to pay for them.

My friend is broke, out of work and more than likely wont be able to work again.

So instead of complaining to me she is broke and cant pay things, she should pay her housing, utilities, food etc BEFORE buying a new cellphone WITH a plan.

(If its important to have one, for emergencies she could have a PRE paid INexpensive cell like myself and a lot of you mentioned and or suggested, and not a 300 dollar phone and a 100 dollar phone plan.

PS) I have to laugh at how sometimes some people don't understand what I am trying to convey and immediately think that Im saying something I am not! Like I never said no one should have cellphones! I asked if its is a top priority? This is why it was SO much easier in the old days when people talked instead of typing. lol.

Shorty, you have started lines before about cell phones, several times if I recall correctly. All have seemed to take a dim view of cells and those who find them useful. I understand that you don't see the need for them, but most people who responded to you would disagree. Each to her own, but the fact is that after several conversations about them, you still seem perplexed by their popularity.

hi shorty.....

not all phones are $300 and not all plans are $100.......for example, right now SPRINT has an all inclusive plan for $60 AND you can get a smart phone, samsung s4 model, that is brand new for FREE if you sign a two year agreement.

Does this woman have a landline? Is this her only way to communicate with people?

Unless you're helping her financially, you really have no right to dictate what she should be spending her money on.

No, not a priority.I think it depends on one’s lifestyle. We still have a land line. The only reason I carry a cell phone is for emergencies.I don’t keep it on or even remember the number.I’ve had it about 15 years and could count on one hand the number of times I’ve used it.

Re: Is having a cellphone a top priority for you?

Though I seldom use my cell phone, I would not be without one. I so remember the days of searching for a (working) pay phone.

I do get annoyed listening to others on their phones. Thinking about it though, I could be a bit jealous as most people seemed engaged in pleasant conversations.

Worrying about how others choose to spend their money is not a concern of mine. I cannot tell an expensive i-phone from a Tracfone. I do know I am one of the few people I know who does not have a smart phone.

I think you summed it up quite succinctly when you posted in the opening of your thread....

Anyway, its none of my business who buys what.

Re: Is having a cellphone a top priority for you?

There are lots of cheap plans and yes...even free for those who qualify....I never concern myself over who owns a cell phone and who doesn't.....but I DETEST inattentive drivers yakking on their cells instead of paying attention to driving.....the amount of drivers with phones glued to their ears bothers me more than how they paid for those phones.

Re: Is having a cellphone a top priority for you?

I just upgraded to my first iphone last week.

If I would have chosen a 5c, it would have been free.

I got a 5s instead, and it cost $99. The unlimited data plan is $60.

I can check my mail, call, text, surf the web, etc. It's fantastic - I don't know why I waited so long!

Re: Is having a cellphone a top priority for you?

Neither a necessity or a priority.

I have it for emergencies only and count on two hands how many times I have actually spoken on it over the past 15 years and it's never been used in an emergency.

If I had my way, I would get rid of it and never miss it.
