Re: Is anything collective now?

I collect for the love of the item, not for any future investment. I can't even imagine doing this. There isn't any collectible that will pay off big time in the future unless it is a piece of art that is too expensive to start with.

Collecting should speak to your heart and not to your pocketbook.

Re: Is anything collective now?

My father was into coin collecting....he always gifted us with yearly sets and then as the grandbabies came they got them also.  I did keep everything in separate bins for the kids until they were old enough to enjoy them and not put them in a vending machine LOL!

Now my son's have them in their safes and really enjoy looking at them.  That's about the only thing I can say we all own that has some value and is collectible.

All those figurines from the 80's and 90's I never purchases....no available funds back then.  But I was gifted those tiny crystal objects...everything from a rose to a basket of flowers.  I have them in a bin and don't know what to do with them.  Positive they are not worth anything but my memories of them.

Re: Is anything collective now?

In the past people would marry, buy a home, and then really establish themselves with their possessions. Most homes had a piano.  China hutches and curio cabinets were popular to display "valuables" and special collections.  Now young people struggle to do the same not just due to economics but also because people move a lot more.  So collectibles are just dust-collecting burdens and  aren't worth a fraction of what was paid for them.

Remember when QVC and HSN would sell collectible dolls? (like Marie Osmond dolls). My mother had a massive collection and spent literally thousands on them. When she passed we got rid of a lot of them but had to give them away as they aren't worth the trouble to sell. But I know my mother derived great enjoyment from them so that's the most important thing.

Probably guns are the only thing that would retain value as a "collectible" LOL.

I've been buying 18k jewelry and, for last 16 years, SW and high end NA jewelry. Enjoy my many purchases and associated memories plus they have definitely increased markedly. My sons and their children will benefit one way or another from this collection.

Re: Is anything collective now?

I am not aware of any of these collectables having any real value right now.  Remember when we were told Beanie Babies were so valuable and certain ones were going to be worth a fortunre?  Ha --- double ha.  I had a neighbor that saw a certain one I had and she wanted to give me not a huge sum but way more than she should have and I said -- no, simply because I liked it.  I should have sold it to her because I eventually just ended up donating it to a charity shop!

Paden City Glass Cut Red Clear Compote Pedestal Lidded Candy Dish

I have 2 of these in excellent condition and just found out they are worth about $70. each. I found this on Etsy. You might want to check there for anything vintage or antique that you are thinking about getting rid of.

@jubilant - yeah, but they are really only worth what someone has paid for them, not what they're listed for.  Try looking on eBay and filter it to sold listings.  What an item sells for is the worth.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?
