Yes of course the narrative from some posters about people on unemployment always applies. My comment wasn't a narrative-it logically applies if you are opposed to government "handouts". Send it back to the govt.

@Greeneyedlady21 We should provide a structured safety net for people unable to work, for areas hit by natural disasters, and such but not enable people able to work to not do so.

People need help and deserve help.  People like to not work and don't.

So if people loose their job because they were laid off, downsized, or because of illness, they're just s.o.l., right?

@tansy and @Anonymous032819 An additional factor is "The Great Resignation of 2021."

From CNBC:

"In what’s been dubbed the “Great Resignation,” a whopping 95% of workers are now considering changing jobs, and 92% are even willing to switch industries to find the right position, according to a recent report by jobs site Monster. com.

Most say burnout and lack of growth opportunities are what is driving the shift, Monster found.

“When we were in the throes of the pandemic, so many people buckled down, now what we’re seeing is a sign of confidence,” said Scott Blumsack, senior vice president of research and insights at Monster.

Already, a record 4 million people quit their jobs in April alone, according to the Labor Department.

At the same time, there are more opportunities for job seekers — with the Labor Department reporting a record 9.3 million job openings as of the latest tally.

“The number of open jobs is higher than ever before, that’s absolutely contributing to why candidates are putting their toe in the water to see what’s out there,” Blumsack said."

These are people switching to other jobs and industries, not going on unemployment. If you resign, you can't get unemployment benefits. (Or as some call that, paying people to not work.) But if a job is not one people would like to do, they are going to choose to do something else. Not sure how to fix that, but it's clearly not completely a matter of money.

And if someone is desperate for cash, nowadays they can just turn to the gig economy immediately instead of taking a frontline big box job, which takes time to find and apply and interview for.

@Porcelain  There are websites just for "gig workers."  One that's popular is Fiverr....Craigslist has had these kinds of gig jobs posted before it became the "it" thing to do.

I agree wholeheartedly with this artifcle.  This is because we should ALL know by now, that many States cut the additional unemployment some were getting.  Much of what we're reading is from the same bunch, spouting the same stuff that's not true.

I know in Walgreens there were several empty shelves. I asked about it and the mgr said they had plenty of stock...but it was sitting in the big truck behind the store because they don't have the workers to unload it or stock it on the shelves. It is super hot. Hope none of the stuff on the truck doesn't ruin due to the heat, like lipsticks.

Then if they want sales that manager should have his behind out there opening those boxes @Frontporchgal .

Has anyone taken into consideration how over 600,000 deaths due to covid (and still counting) may have factored into the available work force?

uhh - haven't most of those been of the retired age-range?

What age would that be @ThinkingOutLoud ?  There is no such thing as "retirement age."  I have doctors who are still working and their older than me.

I went to Costco early this morning.  No shortages that I noticed.

The Ivar's clam chowder has not been available for several months but that's all that I've noticed.

There is also an unaddressed issue for the "long haulers" (people who survived Covid, but are still symptomatic with lung problems, loss of taste, memory and heart issues), to name just a few. Some have already had to have lung transplants and limb amputations.

These are young and middle aged people who, at this point in time, do not know if they will ever be able to return to the work force.
