I know the Mods closed down the thread on Puerto Rico donations, but if this gives anybody a sense of what major disaster is looking like, I am currently writing from Bokeelia Island-a part of Pine Island-and while we now have electricity and water, no household garbage has not been picked up in a couple of weeks.....
I am not asking for sympathy in any way, shape or form. This is our "happy place"- fully insured- that we want to retire to.
The main living area has been spared-no complaints....
Well, we still have many Floridians living in flooded areas with trees down and no accessible roads. Hard workers....not living a "Beachy" lifestyle as I heard one poster say....
They have been here.....houses gone....
My point?
This is much easier terrain to deal with than Puerto Rico, and the job is far from over...
I just can't imagine....
Once again, I am not buying the idea that because it's an island, they can't get the help they so desperately need.
We really need to take a hard look at obliterating natural disasters in each of our home states.
It could happen to any of us-and hopefully we could escape to areas with hot meals and communication....
I want Puerto Rico to get help, but rather than blaming debt, crumbling infrastructure etc, we really do need to take an inventory of our own regions-especially seismic activity...my own assessment is that no blame should be cast, but somehow, we have to do better. We have to get better at helping those in injured geographic regions.
Puerto Rico so very much needs our help....and I just have to say, there are many, many people who live in seismically active zones....and who suffer from more from inland flooding after a hurricane passes.
