Re: If a Friend..............................................................................

@Drythe

The generator is almost brand new. It was only used a few times before I got it. My friend does all of his own machine maintenance so there's goes that idea and he doesn't drink. So that leaves money or a gift card. He likes to go to the casinos so I know exactly where the money would be going...lol!! Then if he wins big, he can treat ME to dinner!Woman LOL

I would repay them for the kindness and take them out for dinner or make them dinner.

Does his casino of choice have VIP passes?  If so, that might be an option.

Somehow I knew he could service it himself, and didn’t drink! 🍹

@SilleeMee   I'd check online or call HD or Lowes and ask what they charge per day for that HP comparable portable generator.   Did he supply the gas also?  That's expensive too.  I'd offer him the approximate amount it would have cost you to rent it, plus the gas, but if he's a good friend I sincerely doubt he'll take it.

In that case, I'd get him a nice gift card or one for a favorite business or restaurant.  Maybe $100 or 150.?  Even if he insists he's doing you a favor as a friend, it's always nice to feel your good deed was appreciated.

Re: If a Friend..............................................................................

You use the word RENT.  Isn't that the definition of the word?  Yes, pay.

If however it is a Loaner than the dinner or gifting is what I would do.

 OR maybe, Could you BUY that generator from him? Then do the gifty thing if he could do the occasional start up and simple maintainance on it?

My friend owns the generator.

At the very least, offer the friend some cash.

If a friend rents out something for you to use, for instance a generator, would you pay your friend the same amount of money which a rental company charges?

@SilleeMee

A lot of my friends own businesses. When I use any of them, I expect my costs to be the same as their other customers. I use their business because I trust them, not because I expect a discount.

Not sure if "your friend" is just someone that is a neighbor that happens to have a "generator", or uses it as a business. When you say "rent", if his normal charge is the same as "a rental company"? That is what I would want to pay.

Re: If a Friend..............................................................................

I pay my son when he fixes my AC.   Not what he would charge, maybe, but I pay him!

I figure the time and skill he uses could have been for someone who would pay him regular rates.

I appreciate the discount!  And I know it is done right!

Re: If a Friend..............................................................................

IMO, it depends on the arrangement that was agreed upon.  The term "rent" implies that there is an agreement for the payment of money in exchange for the use of someone else's property.  Borrowing is allowing the use of something without payment.  If I borrowed a friend's equipment for a day, I wouldn't expect to pay them as friends do favors back and forth, nor would I expect it from them if it was mine.  If I knew I'd need their property for an extended period of time, I'd offer to work out a rental arrangement with them.  I personally am uncomfortable profiting monetarily off of friends.  If I was the property owner, and wasn't going to need the equipment myself, I'd most likely forgo the rent and hope the friend would do the right thing and replace it if they broke it or lost it while in their possession.
