Do you have any photos of you and her together? If so, take it to a photo shop, have it printed to a 5x7 or 8x10, frame it and give it to her. I guarantee she'll love it.

Thanks again for all the ideas. I've looked into many of them online and I have a few options now. I like the idea of the photograph, but maybe putting them together for a signature calendar or some keepsake. I looked at both bangle types and I loved them both. I've also looked at yarn shops locally she might enjoy.

She's coming up here in a week so I'll figure something out by then.

She's a very vivacious joyful loving generous witty person. She loves to knit. She loves PBS television -- Doc Martin, Downton Abbey, etc... She lives with my dad in a retirement community (The Villages). Does this help?

There are a few publications out now re Downton Abbey with knitting patterns and one with sewing patterns. Perhaps she'd enjoy knitting something from that era.

Also, how about gifting her with a portrait photograph of you and your family done by a professional photographer that she could proudly gaze at on a daily basis?

I'm also one for jewelry and if were for me to buy, I'd purchase a heart of diamonds set in yellow gold hanging on a simple gold chain.

I would say that if she has everything and more that she needs, and tends to buy the things that she wants as well, flowers are usually a good gift.

My mom likes to get planters for the outside, on her porch or deck. She tends to have most everything she wants, and this is something that can be enjoyed for months, then disposed of when the season is over. No more "stuff" cluttering up an already full house. I'm tending to get her more "disposable" or use-up-able type gifts, rather than so many things to "keep".

I think for many people in their 50's and older, getting them something they will use up, like food, flowers, gift certificate to favorite restaurant or spa, favorite bath products etc. that will be used, then gone, is more appreciated than something they feel they have to keep because it was a gift. Something that would "spoil" them, that they might not get for themselves.

I used to give my grandma a gift card to her local grocery store or I'd buy her groceries I knew she bought on a regular basis. I would also include a small box of Fannie May as a treat. She was always happy that she got something she actually wanted. She didn't want more "things" or jewelry...she had stopped wearing jewelry years before.

My sister and I got her Edible Arrangements for her birthday -- it was yesterday. She LOVED it.
