I wasn't referring to the pop up ads - who cares about an ad for jewelry or shoes  - i am talking about if you open a site to look at a video that may be something innocent like a recipe or a video about preventing heart disease, but that is only a small part of the page and the rest of the page is all this disgusting krap.Or perhaps the facebook post will say something like 20 hairdos for short hair - but then when you try to run the slideshow - OMG - the stuff that is also on the screen ! The ad block has taken care of it - but if you think that yoiur kids would not see this if they opened the wrong site - you are very naive.

Those ads are not on Facebook. Those ads are on the pages you linked to FROM Facebook. Facebook cannot control what other sites allow to advertise on their pages or what pages your friends or followed pages link to.

That's right.  It really helps to avoid clicking links on Facebook unless we know they're going to safe, reputable sites, though we can't really avoid some of the bizarre ads on otherwise interesting sites.

I like using the "Web of Trust" safe browsing tool add-on/extension which provides a wee bit of a heads up about the link we're thinking of clicking.

@dooBdoo, I try to avoid as much tracking as possible.  I avoid clicking on anything.  I go directly to the site if I'm interested.

And some sites that appear to be safe are not.

I don't even post on my Facebook page anymore.  The stuff my "friends" post is so stupid, boring, nothing interesting about them, just stupid "sayings" all the time, nor are most of us in contact, that I've decided not to post anymore.  They probably think I'm boring too so I have my pic posted, that's it!  Yes, I agree, a lot of ads are coming through.

There is one group on Facebook I enjoy that's it!  😁

Sounds like the problem is with your friends, not Faceboor Unfollow k. You might want to either unfriend the "friends" you put in quote or Unfollow them. If you Unfollow them, their posts will no longer show up on your home page but you will still be friends. Unfollow saves you from having any awkward conversations with actual friends who post things you don't want to see on your own feed.

I highly recommend the unfriend and unfollow features on Facebook.  I very quitely purged my friends list recently and then unfollowed a few more.  Much better now.

Exactly!

I've clicked on tons of videos and stories, etc, and never has one surprised me with a porn ad or anything.

Not.

Even.

Once.

Me either.  Not once.  Not since 1982 on any of my many computers have I had porn pop up--or on face book which I look at about once a week.  Never.

EXACTLY. He's most likely the reason for the ads she's getting.

While I certainly am in the minority, I would NEVER go on Facebook.  My friend joined when it first started and tried to cancel, it is not possible to permanently delete your account no matter what they say.  All these years of not going to the site, yesterday she got 150 emails coming to her from facebook!  Someone must have hacked her and there is no way to contact Facebook without logging in which, of course, she would never do.  This is a real problem that they offer no customer support other than online.  This has put her in a real dimena to get this rectified.  Scary.

@Biftu, You can deactivate your Facebook account (a temporary step -- you can reactivate later if you want) or completely delete the account (a permanent deletion).    It's true the information from our accounts is in Facebook's archives, but it simply isn't available to hackers if we've deactivated or deleted the account.   It won't cause harm for your friend to log into the account to fix any problems, perceived or read -- or her friends can use the report feature to let Facebook know if they do think her account has been hacked.

My guess is the email messages your friend has received are not actually from Facebook and, instead, are from a completely unrelated spammer.  There are ways to check -- hovering the cursor over the sender, looking at the full message header or source, etc. -- and find out who actually is sending the mail.

I'm sorry that happened to her.  I know it's frustrating.  But even though Facebook is far from perfect, I do think we have a tendency to blame them for anything we even think might be remotely related to them.

Can you explain how you can delete your account and not simply de-activate it?

How do I permanently delete my account?

If you don't think you'll use Facebook again, you can request to have your account permanently deleted. Please keep in mind that you won't be able to reactivate your account or retrieve anything you've added. Before you do this, you may want to download a copy of your info from Facebook. Then, if you'd like your account permanently deleted with no option for recovery, log into your account and let us know.

When you delete your account, people won't be able to see it on Facebook. It may take up to 90 days to delete all of the things you've posted, like your photos, status updates or other data stored in backup systems. While we are deleting this information, it is inaccessible to other people using Facebook.

Some of the things you do on Facebook aren’t stored in your account. For example, a friend may still have messages from you even after you delete your account. That information remains after you delete your account.

You cannot permanently delete yourself from Facebook -- this is not true.  Even though I myself have tried in vain, my name still appears with nothing there, but I'm still listed.  I have looked at this many years ago. I never posted anything and only had one friend who was my god daughter who sent pictures of her kids.  For years I kept getting notices that someone sent me things which I never opened. Thankfully these notices have stopped.  Bottom line, you just can't reach them to talk about your issues.  And, my friends notices were all from Facebook.
