I know mine from grandparents.  What exactly does this information do for you? I don't get it.

@Adamlambert

Aside from showing your ethnic background, it matches your DNA with others. Finding missing family.

In my case: I'm Polish/Armenian/Norwegian . I've been doing my genealogy since the 1980's, way before any records appeared on line. The Norwegian story was 2 brothers went to the Dakota Territories and a sister to San Francisco. Well now thanks to hiring a genealogist, I have FOUND the missing families and their DNA matches mine.

Armenian lines in my family cannot be traced due to the Genocides of 1915, so finding a DNA cousin is precious! I have 3 so far.

For the folks who just want to know their ethnic backgrounds, that's OK. But really doing genealogy, finding family and stories is great fun.

If you have no interest in your history, then this just isn't your cup of tea. Easy as that.

Re: I just ordered my AncestryDNA!

Let us know results, if you haven't yet, haven't read all (sorry), but this is something interesting to me. I haven't done it, but I love the shows on finding people's ancestors.

I think it would be interesting.    Scary maybe, I read once that 1 out of 10 children were not fathered by the husband.  Don't know if that's true or not, but I do know people that have found out their Dads were not their biological Fathers.

I thought Native Americans were also a "blend" of people. The only true "native" is from Africa (Ethiopia). According to The Human Genome Project we all are connected from this area of the world. AwesomeSmiley Happy

Re: I just ordered my AncestryDNA!

Once you get your results, you can download your raw data file and upload it to a couple if free sites. I have uploaded to Www.gedmatch.com and www.dna.land. Both of those have different types of information available. For example, gedmatch has an ancient dna tool where they can show you what segments match samples found in caves etc. Some are 50,000 years old. Gedmatch has a lot of different algorithms. All of the analysis is based on probability and statistics.

Dna.land has more specific locations. Fie example, the Italian Dna that I have comes from Sicily and Sardinia. The other tests were more generic with the location. It is all very interesting to me. I never knew I had any connection to that part of the world.

Also, what I like about ancestry is that when I find DNA relatives who share ancestors with me in our family trees, I feel that helps prove that my tree is accurate.

No way will I send my DNA off to some private company.......I have no idea what they might do with that information.
