I disagree.  To many people, it's a lot of money.  And it may have been designated for a certain purpose or bill.

Maybe it was an elderly person who lost the money, and is physically unable to actively search for it.  (That's certainly possible since a senior center is nearby.)

I think it's unlikely that someone dropped $40 and decided not to look for it because they didn't think it was a lot of money.  That makes no sense to me. Even wealthy people don't do that.

It's far more likely that they didn't realize they had lost it right away and they're not sure where it could be.  They actually could have tried to re-trace their steps from that day, and gone back later on to the very place the OP had already found it and picked it up.

I think that since you called the library and the senior center, the money is yours to keep.

However, I think I would wait another day, and then call the library and senior center again just in case whoever lost the money hadn't realized it right away.

But that's just me.  I think it's okay to keep it right now, but for my own peace of mind, I would give it more one day.

Years ago I used to take my elderly dad to the grocery store. I found a $20 bill lying on the floor in the dairy dept. I kept it. Years later I was shopping again at that same store and, yes, in the same exact spot, I looked down and found a womans vintage ring. I turned it in at the front desk and since a lot of elderly folks shop there, I thought they may come back for it. They asked if I wanted to leave my name, I didn't, and I only hope this ring was returned to its owner.

I would wait at least 24 to 48 hrs to see if anyone realizes they lost their money.  If no one claims it then I would donate 20 to the library and 20 to the senior center.

Put it in your pocket, you called both the library and senior center and no money was reported missing.

How does anyone know that whomever would "claim" it is being honest?  Whatever makes a person feel right.  If one is that concerned about needy people, there are many ways to help.

Simply knowing what being on one's own last dime feels like, doesn't justify all future acts regarding found money, in my book.

I found $60 on the ground at work once.  I turned it into the accounting office.  After a period of time, and no one claimed it, they gave it back to me.

I work at a large university library.  We have quite a few  wealthy students (lots of Saudi princes, etc)  Well one of them took out a book and used $100.00 bills as book marks.  My co worker (this happened before I came) found a book on the shelf with 4 (count them) $100.00 bill used as book marks.  Book's page was underlined, with notes etc.  She turned it in the library.  No one came to claim the money.  Eventually after  a year, my co worker was given the money.

As a side note (and a sad one) something similar happend (not sure of the money) years ago in the library.   This was late at night.  University libraries are open 24 hours a day. A student found money (over $100.00 but not sure how much)  and not knowing where to go, gave it to a security guard.  The guard told the student that they will split the money.  The student (was desperate for money....well he is a student) agreed.  But started to feel guilty.  He went to the Reference desk and confessed.  The guard was fired. I don't remember what happened to the student.

I'm going back to the library and senior center after work today and ask again.  If nobody reported the money missing, I'm keeping one $20.00 and giving the $20.00 to a charity.

@songbirdJust because the $ was found between the library and the senior center does not prove somebody from one of those places lost that money. Checking out those two places may be a good thing but doesn't really mean it's the only route to check.

Do you really need that $20?  Something tells me the $40 will remain with you in entirety.

Somebody's loss will be felt.  Perhaps giving the total to soften another person's struggle would be better.

@songbird  You did the right thing checking as far as you could.  It's yours.  You should do whatever you want to with it.  Congrats on the find!!

eta...When you checked with the library and the senior center, did you leave your phone number?  I would do that, so that in the next few days if whoever lost it traces their steps looking for it, they could call you to claim it.

I did that when I found a $50 bill in a local store.  Checked to see if anyone had said they'd lost anything, "here's my number."  Nobody called.
