Re: I Learned a New Word Today

Me too @terrier3!  I love dusk at any time of the year, but it just seems to be especially magical during the winter months, doesn't it?  Woman Happy

This made my day @sunala!!  There isn't much that is more beautiful than this effect, especially during the fall when the light is filtering through red, orange, and yellow leaves.  Stunning!  Thanks for putting a name to it!!

Our dear @MaggieMack recently taught me another new word for a natural phenomenon I've always loved... "alpenglow."

Alpenglow (from German: Alpenglühen) is an optical phenomenon in which a horizontal red glowing band is observed on the horizon opposite to the sun. This effect occurs when the Sun is just below the horizon.

I've noticed it seems to be much more prominent in the winter, but that may be just an illusion due to there being less greenery obstructing our view of the horizon...

LOVE this picture.

This has always been my favorite time of the day in the winter.

When I was young, I had piano lessons two afternoons afterschool and I had to walk a mile each way to the convent in the snow. The other days we skated at the nearby outdoor rink until just about this time of day.

That's so beautiful! Isn't it hard to tell if it's dusk or dawn if you're looking at a photo? I think the only way to tell the difference is if you're actually there and you can tell east from west.  Gorgeous, peaceful photo!
