I feel sorry for the people that wont be able to work because events were canceled or the industry they serve has been shut down....they still got bills to pay.....I'm not concerned about Tom Hanks...I think he can fend for himself...

A few weeks ago, the Food Bank here had already started a campaign to help out low-income families and seniors on fixed incomes .....

“Our low-income families, particularly our seniors on fixed incomes, don’t have the luxury of stocking up in case of a virus outbreak, and they certainly don’t have the ability to weather a two-week quarantine or leave without pay if their place of employment sees a slow down in business.”

I hope as everyone stockpiles for they own needs, that they also donate a few bucks to the needy.....

@Spurt That’s a really good point.  I hadn’t thought about the lack of income to purchase extra provisions, if they could get to the store.  But perhaps those who can get out can offer to get groceries for someone shut in.  I’ll look for some items to donate.

@nana59    I understand.  As a grandparent, I know my grandchildren are going to be upset when they learn their weekend birthday party has been canceled.  Wish I could be nearby to hug them and console them!  

I wish we would not make it a contest to compare who has suffered the most.  Children do not understand what is doing on in our crazy world right now. They live in the moment, and will be very disappointed when something they looked forward to, is taken away.

There are also other consequences if schools are closed.  Parents may have to stay home from work to be with their children risking losing income.  Also many poor children rely on school to feed them as the free breakfasts and lunches schools provide for low income students are the only meals they eat.

@ninjawife, it certainly is a domino effect. I hope that that government agencies can step in and make sure that children get fed. That should be a given.

That remains to be seen.  Legislation is being introduced to increase food and unemployment assistance.  But there is some opposition.

And it's the very people you mention - losing their livlihoods, income etc., for whom I feel most.

I know this is unpopular, but I really believe this is an Emperor's New Clothes situation and people are afraid not to go along - canceling everything.

If this is really a "pandemic" "crisis" then it's a very mild one. Four months in -  we have less than 5,000 deaths worldwide - 40 in the U.S.  We lose 40 people in a weekend in violence in Chicago.  If this is "so much worse" than the flu, the numbers aren't even remotely close to bearing that out.

I know we are being told that "millions will die" and "ventilators will be rationed" but I see absolutely no evidence of that happening based on the actual severe illnesses and deaths so far.

This train of thought is what Italy felt a week or so ago. They never imagined they would all be on lockdown and decisions made who should be treated first if at all.

This reported from a friend of a friend now in Italy warning us to not let this happen here!
