As a political science major, I can't walk away from the news. ever.
And as we get closer to the election, I feel it even more important to be watching and fully informed. Those debates can't come too soon for me, and I hope even people who think they know who/what they want tune in and stay informed.
I think that anyone on either side of the spectrum would have said in January that they felt confident where the election would go (in their own opinion), what the most important issues were, how they were going to vote. So much has blown up in the last 5 months, and it continues to get more and more complex and important to know what is going on, who is doing what, who is saying what, whether it concerns the virus, or any of the other hot topics going on right now.
I get it, that many people need a break from it. But this political geek can't let it go right now, and then just the need to stay informed on the virus numbers and happenings (as much as we can rely on those numbers, I'm not sure) seems prudent.
Every day, there is more news than is easily processed, and there are so many things happening at local levels and state levels with mandates, and tightening controls, I find it important to know. I won't list them here, as to not get the thread taken down, but so much going on, with serious effects, needs individual voters to be aware and deciding what is and isn't acceptable to them.

It is important to keep things in perspective though and if it is getting to someone, it is prudent to walk away for a little while and take a break.
This year has been a particularly horrible year. Not just the pandemic, but the fires in Australia and other major events have taken place as well.
Thank you, and thanks to @CrazyKittyLvr2 for starting this thread.
I Too feel that it is important to stay informed, and also follow several professional journals.
In the past month or so I have ONLY Read the news, via their websites, getting various views, collecting facts, and opinions, but no Drama, no Shouting, no Hysteria. I am an avid reader anyway, and this works well for me. Still getting news, still feel updated, but at least for now it is a nice change.
Never Facebook, nor Instagram, No news alert emails, or texts. The TV is on just for pleasure, no News Channels.
DH and I have found this helpful.
Hope everyone finds a good way to balance.

As I was steaming the broccoli and taking the hobo potatoes out of aluminium foil, my DH said I sure seemed happy tonight. I said it was because I hadn't watched a bit of news today. When he uncorked the wine and brought in the steaks from the grill, I was on cloud nine☁. I'll hold off watching the national news until Monday. Might as well enjoy the weekend.

You are so right. I received a taste of that recently. So I'm done with posting.

I listen to NPR at home before I start work from home. I don't watch TV news or internet feeds, though I read the NY Times and the WPost.
Has nothing to do with CoVid: as I have posted here, it was my reaction to 9/11 and the destruction of the World Trade towers. I chose at that point to turn off the visual stuff and go with the radio version. It's easier to take in.
Now I also read a lot of sites online. "Film at 11:00"? I won't be there. Being informed is necessary, being afflicted with nightmares by shock tactics by the media--I pass on that. I have to know about it, but I don't have to be a witness. especially ad infinitum, with the same footage showing every 15 minutes.

I read the news, i read about 4 newspapers, and if in the car I will listen a bit to NPR. I hate the political news today. It angers me to know end, because I have always been involved. Now I fee hopeless at times. I am already depressed about it, and listening to how low the US has sunk and the government working to only one end, no thank you. When I read the news, i get abetter picture. I also get news not of apolitical nature as well when I read the newspaper. . I read uplifting stories, informing stories, . Tv news does not believe in covering anything but political news. What ever happened to world news, state news, national news. Everything centers around the White House...thats it.

I agree with people backing off from the news. We know what the score is anyway. Whatever you do don't sit down with "the" book hours on end. It is so toxic I read it a bit at a time.

@qualitygal... Me too... I've always read a lot for entertainment but it's been off the charts this year... Very glad I can once again avail myself of library books...
I'm with you ladies, too.
I've always been an avid reader, but now, even more so,
For those of you who may not even be aware, our libraries offer the Over Drive app. for E-Readers and for our computers.
You can read e-books for free through your library. ![]()
My library system is also offering curb-side pick-up service for those who want to read regular library books, too.
As for the news, I try not to focus on it too much these days.
I can feel very overwhelmed by it too, just like others can.
We don't have cable TV anymore, so I get my local daily news through our local area radio station. We can get our local area news, plus the CBS national news this way.
I can also get the national news from my Internet home page.
Plus, whatever I haven't seen or heard, I'll usually find out about here, as everyone is very informed here about what's going on in the world. ![]()
