ADOPT A CAT - my sister got rid of hers with Kia - he's a grinch, clawless but a house cat on the hunt nonetheless, and rid her home of them in a matter of days.

Good luck! We have an exterminator for 6 years due to field mice every Fall (corn field behind our home). And we had 2 cats back then and now we have four cats! Then this past Spring we saw a RAT out back in our yard because of my husband throwing bird seed..We then fired our old exterminator and hired a new exterminator (Who cost an arm and a leg I might add) And he told DH no loose bird seed, only suet blocks. Anyway, our new exterminator is wonderful. He baits the entire outside and in our cellar and garage too. SO FAR since hiring the new exterminator we had nothing in our garage or cellar. BUT bait was taken by mice outside near our deck. And I am sick just typing this because I do not like rodents Brrrrr. Our extermiantor comes every other month and we will have him forever because I hate rodents! PS this is in a country development of homes. Again good luck!

In any case, we had a cat once that went out into a field near where we lived, caught a mouse, brought it in the house and turned it loose, then when the mouse would run across the floor would just look at it.
I was SO mad at that cat! We finally caught the mouse, but the cat had NO interest in it.
Been there!
But instead of a mouse, try having a live fricken RAT running around your house!

For the same reason people are afraid of spiders @Sooner ..If you are , you are

Not only are cats (most of them anyway) the organic version of the best mouse traps, their scent is also a deterrant for mice to take up residence. Cats leave their scent everywhere and mice can smell it. Since we have our kitties, we haven't seen a critter in years.

@Jordan2 I kept seeing a mouse in my house several years ago. I put down traps and never caught it. I called an exterminator who put poison in enclosed boxes that the mice could get in. He put them in the back of all of the cabinets and inside the air return vent. I never saw the mouse again. I never smelled a dead mouse either. There was no way my dog could get to the poison.
This year I was taking my Christmas Snow Village to be donated. The styrofoam box of one of the houses was completely shredded, and there were wads of dog hair stuffed in it. It was obviously where the mouse was building a nest. I'm so glad I called the exterminator.

The worst experiece was with one of those awful glue traps many many years ago. Got up early when the BF went to work and decided to vacuum. Fell asleep on the sofa. Woke up to find the husky in my face with his nose stuck to the trap. Then I looked to the side and saw the mouse tail hanging down near my cheek. He had grabbed the mouse (in the trap) and woke me up to let "them" out. Fasted I ever jumped off a piece of furniture and my heart was pounding so hard I didn't need a cup of coffee.
I would have gone into cardiac arrest.

We relented 3 years ago of trying to deal with it ourselves and signed up for a policy with an exterminator, they come out every 3 months and check inside and outside, seal off areas, worth every penny to let a pro handle it.

@Lattelvr do you throw the whole thing out of do you release the dead mouse? Are these traps expensive?
@Lattelvr - I buy mousetraps at the Dollar Store. I use one of those long handled things with a grabber at the end (I'm short so I have two of them - one I use for inside the house the other for outside.
I scoop up the whole mousetrap - dead mouse and all and put it in a plastic grocery bag and tie it off really tight and toss it into the trash if it's winter. If it's summer I would take my trash to the dump so it doesn't smell in betweeen trash days.

LOL...We used to live in an old 1800's farmhouse. I bought 3 lbs of expensive jelly beans. I woke up and only a handful of jelly beans were left in the candy dish. I yelled at my husband for eating them all. Years laters, I found a brick of jelly beans in a box in my storage room.
Now I just buy traps. We have never had one in the house but yes in the garage. They destroyed the headliner of our classic car. I have no mercy now.
