Matthew no longer a hurricane, 'catastrophic flooding' still expected

Matthew has officially been downgraded to post-tropical cyclone status, but remains a major threat to life and property according to the National Hurricane Center. "There is a danger of life-threatening inundation during the next 36 [to 48] hours."

My sister took this on 17A not far from her house. She's well inland. Her area was spared. Just rain and wind. No flooding or damage like they got just 20 minutes to the coast.

So as not to panic those who have places at Seabrook Island or Kiawah Island and don't yet know the condition: The first picture above was not taken at Seabrook Island. I Googled it, and it was a tweeted pic from Edisto Beach, about 58 miles from Seabrook Island. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was affected by Hurricane Matthew.

Our friends who live on Hilton Head island got a text from their neighbor who rode the storm out that their home is fine and the neighborhood is fine, just the electric isn't on yet. They are heading home today I believe. Note that the neighbor was able to get a signal to text from Hilton Head Island.

The last I heard, no one is allowed on the island yet.  If you leave the island, you will not be allowed to return.

Do they actually live on HH or in Sun City in Bluffton?

Would-be returnees to the Bluffton area were turned back by law enforcement officials Sunday morning along U.S. 278.

Beaufort County is now open except for Hilton Head, Harbor, and Fripp Islands.

How are the other areas affected by Matthew??

Hurricane Matthew brutalized the Southeast coast for four days before weakening and veering out over the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday, leaving a trail of devastation with at least 23 dead, over 1 million homes and businesses without power and billions of dollars in damage.

Matthew wreaked havoc in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia before it was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone on Sunday as it headed east over the Atlantic.

The death toll spans all five states: 10 people were killed in North Carolina, six died in Florida, four in Georgia, two in South Carolina and one in Virginia.

The storm brought winds of up to 100 mph, as much as 15 inches of rain and powerful storm surges of up to 9 feet to some areas . . .
