I don't get why this procedure had to be done in the first place BUT I have a question.

Anesthesia is administered by an Anesthesiologist. It is a specialty, right???? So, how come a dentist can administer it w/o supervision???

A former dentist of mine was a Board Certified Anesthesiologist and dentist. My astonishment is why a three year old needed complicated root canal work. A real tragedy.

I thought dentists could use it too, however anytime one goes under, there are risks.

Their attorney is questioning the ""need"" to have root canals done on a 3yr old.

It's all about the $ any more.

Hi, SydneyH. You're right. They're allowed to use those anesthetics and sedatives for which they've been appropriately trained. Just as with any of these drugs, there are dangers.

This story is tragic. Frontline on PBS did an investigative piece, re-aired not long ago, about the inappropriate and unnecessary dental work being done on young children. Tragic.

Children are especially at risk due to their relatively light body weight. When my son had to be put under to remove something from his ear seems like I had to sign a tome of paperwork even though he was only under 8 minutes. I can tell you it scared the #### out of me.

Why in the world would a 3 year old need 4 root canals? I would think most dentists would have just pulled the baby teeth instead. Not to mention how did a 3 year olds teeth get so bad?

The article said the parents filed the lawsuit 2 days after the little girl passed away. I know everyone grieves differently but I don't think I would even be functioning enough to think about a lawsuit.

So sad. So very sad.

That dentist sounds incompetent. So sad. I never got put under and I had extensive work done on my teeth over the years including pulling teeth, root canals etc etc. My dentist uses French numbing agents. Never feel a thing.

What a sad, tragic story. I guess as a mom I'm also wondering why a 3 yr old needs root canals too. She still has baby teeth so why didn't they just either pull the teeth or wait until they came out naturally. I think I'd be getting second and possibly third opinions about needing root canals at that age. Also, I don't know any dentists who do root canals due to the extra training an endodontist needs. I've had root canals and have never needed anesthesia for the procedure. They usually numb my mouth up and do the work. Lots of why questions here.
