Could be percerived that way, but I am not on their payroll and I hope it sent a message that having just one or two registers open on a major shopping day is poor judgement. I am not a WalMart Shopper unless I need a prescription filled. My thinking is that the supervisor missed an opportunity, not I. It is not my job to be helpful-I'm the customer-it is their job to be helpful and gracious.

Does any one really believe the stores are going to change because someone doesn't like self- service...🙄

Perhaps the suggestion was made to alleviate your waiting time in a long line.

Self-checkout is here to stay.

You may be the customer but being helpful and gracious still swings both ways.

You accomplished nothing except feeling you told them.

Nothing changed, you left, and the world continues on.

I use self checkout every chance I get. It's usually so much faster and I get to bag everything exactly the way I want it. I don't understand the dislike for self checkouts but happy that I can breeze through while others wait in line just so someone else can handle their goods. I'm 76 but in good shape so I hope to be checking myself out for years to come.

@Jo1313 what a spiteful nasty thing to do. You sound like one of those difficult customers.  And since you have shoulder problems & need help bagging you should use the regular checkout.

I looked at her and said that I don't do that, turned and walked out the door leaving an entire cart full of food sitting there.

The only grocery store that I use a cashier is Wegman's.  That's because I usually have a cart full of groceries.  But I still help bag.  Otherwise, any other store, I bag my own items.

Someone mentioned about pumping their own gas - now that I hate!  I always used gas stations that pump for you.  When I moved to Delaware, at the ripe old age of 64, I had to learn how to pump gas.  Ugh.

Now that I'm back in NY, I'm using gas stations that pump for me.

@Mz iMac - You must be in New Jersey.  I believe that's the only state left that has such a law.  Oregon dropped that some time ago.

Personally, I prefer to pump my own gas.  Always have.

I never use self checkout.  I'm rarely in a hurry.  I have time and energy enough to stand in line and they aren't rewarding me for using self checkout.  Take 2% off my total and I'd consider it

So, to answer the original question, I use self-checkout whenever it's available.  And I bag my own groceries.

I'm not sure what the OP thought happened to the "girl" who refused to bag the groceries for her, as she says she "never saw her again".  Does she think she got the girl fired (unlikely).  Perhaps the girl quit, thinking she could find a better job than dealing with rude customers.

It's amazing to me how many "angry" customers there seem to be in recent years.  And I've never believed that "the customer is always right".  Sometimes the customer is just downright wrong.  And rude.
