I think I've done it twice.  The first time I had a horrible experience at Meijer and the second time I happened to get in the wrong (LONG) line at Costco.

Long lines with a cashier are rarely an issue for me as I get out very early in the morning to buy groceries.  I never have to stand in line that early in the morning.

From time to time. Doesn't really bother me. When I check out and bag items myself I know things will be bagged in a way that makes sense. I've had a loaf of bread smashed and an item broken due to careless baggers.

I prefer self checkout. I can bag as I wish. Frozen items together, refrigerated items together, produce together...It makes putting everything away easier.

If it helps the store's profit margin, good. There isn't a large mark-up on groceries like there is on jewelry and clothing.

In my area we are fortunate to have a local chain called Market Basket.  In addition to incredibly good prices they must train their employees well.  You can ask almost anyone in any aisle where something is located and they know.  Sometimes they even walk you over to it!

They do not have and will not install any self-checkout registers.  There are 25 to 32 registers and they are almost ALL OPEN at any time.  This kind of customer service is why all the registers are very busy almost all day.

@CrazyTimes  And don't forget about checkers bruising the apples and bananas, etc. by tossing them around.  I prefer to scan my things (so I can see if sales prices ring up correctly) and  bag my own.

@tipsy  Seems to me that it would have been better to politely ask for the manager and explain the situation about the shoulder and the need for help with bagging BEFORE the ring up.

We have only used self check-out once for groceries but if we go to Home Depot they use it for everytng so we just don't go there any longer.  We were at Walmart a few years ago, right before T-Giving, they had only a couple registers open and the 'supervisor' said I was going to need to use self check out. . . I looked at her and said that I don't do that, turned and walked out the door leaving an entire cart full of food sitting there.

@We rescue cats

That was rude and a missed opportunity to be helpful, to be gracious.

@Quackeroo it sounds like she had the ring up done intentionally to be a nuisance to the cashier knowing she was not going to purchase.

I prefer to do my own scanning in grocery stores as long as there is room to do so.

My favorite store location has a full conveyer belt to line up items on.  I use the hand held scanner and scan everything like that.  Then I put everything back into the cart unbagged.

Some items I don't even remove from the shopping cart. I just scan them in place.  I prefer not to bag anything in the store.

When I get to my car. I have bags, boxes and foldable coolers that I seperate my items into in the trunk.

I use self scanners in Walmart too...I like the hand held device.  I just scan and go and bag in my car.

I hate the bags the stores use and I don't like the way the cashiers bag.  I don't want help bagging.

I find that my reusable shopping bags and boxes make everything easier to carry inside my house.
