I would feed my baby brother who was 7 years younger and get a penny a bite. More to give my mom a break.
I babysat at 11 years old for quite a few neighbors for 50 cents an hour and a dollar after midnight.
I got my first job at 15 at a hamburger joint and they paid me under the table. 1.00 an hour.
I always worked 2-3 jobs to get by.
I bought my first car at 19.
My parents had no spare money so it was up to us to make it ourselves.
When I was 21 I was making more money than my dad. He worked for Canada Dry and I worked for Safeway. Both union jobs.
Kids where I live get a new car in high school and many of them don't work.

No allowance. I don't think my parents ever heard the word "allowance." In grammar school - we went home for lunch. It was only a couple of blocks away.
In high school .... we got money for bus fare and lunch.
