John, thank you for doing this. I wish animal abuse was a felony every where.

Re: How do you feel about the exploitation of children and animals on TV to solicit charitable donations?

I spent a lot of my professional life working with children who had, among oter issues, cleft lip and cleft palate. I am always happy to see a new version of the "Smile Train" half hour documentary commercials. It is literally possible to reshape a child's entire existence with a surgery that costs less than $300. God Bless the charity and the doctors who carry out the work! I cannot and do not watch the doggy commercials because there is never a happy ending shown. Can't bear the eyes.

I HATE these commercials and turn the channels, but I think what these AD Agencies are trying to do is to show what's out in the real world.....

Some people have a fairy tale image (no pun intended) of all these animals living happy and healthy lives, they don't realize the horrible conditions some animals live in or that they are abused, even those on the street with no homes starving just trying to survive, they think oh someone probably feeds them...So I think they are going for a SHOCK value, BUT as someone else said I think they should temper this with how the agency helped the animal, got them healthy and showing these same animals now up for adoption or being adopted.....Too many people are ignoring the message because it is difficult to take, and turning away before you hear how you can help, which doesn't help the animals...

You can also check charitynavigator.org it's a free service that shows how much they spend on advertising, how much their executive makes, and where the money goes.

It's called free speech. They have a right to air it and we have a right to change the channel -as I always do.

While, they increased the amount of the fine for animal abuse in our area, I think it should be a national law that it is felony. ...
