Re: How do you feel about the exploitation of children and animals on TV to solicit charitable donations?

I don't think it is exploitation, I think the commercials are just showing us what is reality for some people and animals. They are engaging our emotions like any good movie, book or TV show because if they didn't we wouldn't pay any attention.

Unless the network if providing the commercial free, I can't imagine how charities can pay for these over-long commercials. I do my share of charitable contributing, but not necessarily as a result of TV ads. I change the channel immediately.

Changing the channel because we find the images unsettling is the problem. It is nothing but apathy towards hunger, illness, and abuse.

If these images disturb you, do something to help solve them rather than pretending they do not exist.

Why are you assuming that those who say they change the channel aren't doing anything?

Knowing something exists is not a reason to watch it happen on TV. I know terrible murders, child abuse, and other atrocities exist but that doesn't mean I need to sit in front of a TV and watch it happen. There are many things I REFUSE to watch on television, because I care about what I expose myself to......garbage in, garbage out, as the old saying goes.

There are a lot of things I won't watch.

I don't watch ANY commercials - at all.

I always wonder why they don't take the money they spent on the production and what air time is costing them ... and use it on the animals and kids.

Re one of the children's funds ... they mention that they've helped thousands of children flee poverty. I wonder how many of them are among today's donors.

RIDICULOUS assumption...

changing the channel is not synonymous with doing nothing...{#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

I get terribly tired of them, especially on late-night TV. I always wonder about the ones for third-world children who they say will write to their benefactor. I wonder who really writes those letters?

It makes the point, but a lot of these charities are pretty corrupt on both the local and national level.

I can't watch the animals... it breaks my heart and affects me for days.

I know the abuse animals go through and we do a lot to help. Most people I associate with do a lot to help animals.
