First I air them out on a hanger, let the slight odor dissipate for a week or two, then wash. I believe most sheets and blankets have a suggesting to wash first. Some pants suggest washing first, as I recall. I believe it's because many anti-mildew-fungal/anti-pest sprays are used on items being shipped on ships, etc.
You must not be anxious to wear your new purchases if you air them out for a week or 2.
I have never purchased a pair of pants that came with instructions to wash before wearing? What kind of pants are you talking about?

Abbey: Could be because of the dark/black dyes...........I don't recall exactly which brands. Only, a couple of times there was a tag saying wash before wearing. No, I'm never anxious to wear new clothes.........I'm sensitive to chemicals and fabric odors, etc. But, airing items out first, and then washing them seems to work (for me, anyway). Doesn't have to necessarily be outside/outdoors.

I could be wrong, but I really don't think that bleach is the answer. I know that some here will use bleach on things that are around food and such, but I wouldn't.

Straight bleach is too harsh, maybe even caustic, IMO. I'd use peroxide diluted with water. For toothbrushes, cooking items, etc.

You didn't say it was because of dark/black dyes, rather because many anti-mildew-fungal/anti-pest sprays are used on items being shipped on ships, etc.
I have seen warnings about dark dyes but never a warning about anti-mildew-fungal/anti-pest sprays.

Oh, Abbey, I'm so sorry........I didn't correctly explain (
). p.s. Regarding sheets and blankets, I'm assuming that it's the sizing/sprays/whatever that is used on the fabric and packaging. Anyway, a good idea to wash items first. Just to be safe. Especially baby clothes and items. Very important, as they (babies) can't tell us what's bothering them., how they are feeling, etc.

Guilty of not cleaning a new toothbrush out of the package.
When we were kids, the family toothbrushes hung together on a wall mount holder. I do not think they were ever sanitized. There was only 1 cup in the holder, too.

That's what we use and also the Air Floss.
Love them !
