Re: How Hot Is It In The West?

@Noel7, I hear ya.  I lived in Burbank when I was young before moving to the beach.  That was awful.  Between the smog and the heat there were many days we weren't allowed to go out on the playground at school.

What area are you in now?  In Sacramento, itself?

I'm sorry about the Lupus.  That adds a whole new dimension I imagine.

You'd have to live inside in Arizona for awhile whereas I could at least venture out for a bit in Nor Cal without it being too much.

However, I also remember a lot more rain during winter too. I remember a few times in the Valley our roads flooded to the point that people were using their canoes to get around (for fun, of course), seriously.

I DO believe in climate change, I DO believe humans are partially responsible but I also DO remember extreme heat back then, but also more rain than what they get now.  There is hardly a winter anymore. It seems there is only a summer and a Fall. I'd hardly call what Nor Cal gets a true winter now. At least not in the Valley. A bit different in the Sierra Nevadas and higher elevations but not in the Valley.

@HappyDaze

The heat inland can be bad, especially the East Bay, other areas, too.  But I don't remember it ever being 108 in multiple areas around here.

The weather reporters are saying it's record breaking.

@Noel7I agree; I've lived all but about 12 years of my life in Northern California, and I don't remember it ever being this hot this early and for so long.  I think today is day 5 of temps in the 105-109 range, with three more days of 100+ to come.

It's not unusual for 100+ in July and August, but not like the streak we are having now. And I expect heat like this in July and August, NOT June!

@Wsmom

I'm in San Francisco, born and raised.  Years ago, we used to take trips to Sacramento every so often.  It was so hot the last time, I just haven't been back. Now I limit our road trips to cooler places, especially after a flight to Scottsdale one February that turned out to be a heatwave, lol.

Hi @Caligurll

Right!  When I was in high school our heatwaves lasted three days at the most and were few and far between.  Not anymore.  Our weather guys said last night that yesterday was day six for SF with several more days to come, through the weekend.

According to meteorologists we are in a time of extreme weather. This means there will be extreme swings in weather patterns. I heard one weatherman say it's like a yoyo effect...really hot or really cold and droughts or flooding in places we haven't seen in a long time. Mother Nature at her finest.

Yes, that's definitely what they're saying @SilleeMee

I could take the extreme cold easier than the extreme heat Smiley Happy

TOO HOT!  Especially when you do not have AC!  Heat Advisories are posted everywhere.  Tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day for us.  We are not used to this heat in SF Bay Area.

My Yorkie and I are just going to lay around under the fan!

Oh, good @onliner  They are sending out advisories for pets.

We have two Persian cats, a couple of years ago it was so hot my daughter trimmed the fur way down for the one cat we had then.

I've also wet the fur on their head with cool water, which I've seen suggested.

I am also going to freeze a couple of water bottles to lay next to the dog and I put a few ice cubes in her water dish several times during the day.

Good ideas @onliner We do the ice in their water, I never thought of cold water bottles.

I've also read that putting their feet in cool water helps, probably not for long.
