How in the world did our ancestors ever stay on a horse using this precarious perch?  There was a "hook" of sort for the right leg but at a trot or faster, it seems it would've  been very difficult to keep one's  balance.

Even worse, this photo was taken of the young lady about to embark on a romp with her hunt club which meant she was jumping with this contraption.

Bravo to our grandmothers and great-grandmother's for their athletic prowess.   No wonder they celebrated the feminist movement and the wearing of pants.

Condolences to the poor horse on the loss of his tail and his shaved legs.

Re: How Did They Do It?

@Kachina624   I always wondered the same thing lol. My great grandmother had her very own side saddle she used to ride with.  It was real fancy.  They always kept it clean and polished put up in their barn.  I think my mom's sister ended up getting it.  I'd sure love to see it again.  I hope she's taking good care of it.

There are Two "hooks" on the side saddle.

You should sit absolutely square and forward on the horses back.  Your spine should be directly over the horses spine in a straight line.

the upper hook is to hook the right leg over to stabilize.   The lower hook presses the left leg against the horses body and the foot is in the stirrup.

I always wanted to learn side saddle, it looks so elegant,  but horses are few and far between around here.  Not to mention the Horse has to be trained in sidesaddle too!

Sad to see the "Bob tail" fashion.

The Legs on that horse are the only parts that WEREN'T shaved.

How DID they do it. I'd be hard pressed to even get up on a horse let alone side saddle. Gotta hand it to them.

Oppression of women. Unless your a student of history you wouldn't believe how , we , women have always been treated like slaves.

My ancestors couldn't AFFORD a horse....and I prefer 500 under the hood of a car...  (!!)
