Re: Home security signs - do they deter theft?

We also have a "neighborhood watch" program that encourages people to keep an eye on the neighborhood and report anything suspicous. Our nextdoor neighbors were away on vacation and told us their plans so one day I hear someone over there trying to get into the house. DH yells over the fence that we are calling the Police and the woman started explaining that she was our neighbor's mom and trying to get into the house to borrow something but had the wrong key. We asked to see ID and called our neighbor (on vacation...thank God for cell phones!) and everything was ok. But it could have been a crook and our neighbors were very thankful for us being watchful for their property as they have been for ours. One of the safest things you can have is a good neighbor....and a good barky dog.

I see several houses along our street with home security signs next to their houses. I've often wondered if that makes a thief think there must be something valuable in that house and more likely to strike. Does it somehow make a house more of a target?

@morganjen  It depends.  A petty thief will look for an easier way into a home - a house with an alarm would not be worth the trouble.

More experienced thieves can still work their way around an alarm system.  That is why the keypad should never be placed directly inside the door - the person(s) can simplly rip it from the wall.  One well known alarm monitoring company has had problems with this happening lately.

It all depends upon how well the alarm system is installed - there are ways to shore up your system so that even the more experienced thieves will have a harder time getting in.

I have security bars on my windows and a security sign from a security company (one of the neighbors works there and gave me a sign). I also have a padlock on my front gate.

I leave 5 front lights on all night and 2 in the back.   I guess if they want to break in they will through the front door (double locks).   But, they will have to scale my front wall coming and going.

Re: Home security signs - do they deter theft?

I mentioned this here or somewhere before.........Some of these 'robbers' have such high self esteem (it seems), carrying out TV's and other things right in front of gardeners/roofers/homeowners who are standing across the street.  Again, what makes them so confident, not worrying about anything or anyone?  Some sort of 'I don't care and I can accomplish all, anytime and anywhere' pill?

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
