geez after my visit today to mail 4 boxes & 1 8x11" padded envelope I think I'm getting a "bargain" on Q shipping.
First, I went to UPS store (I had a choice of Using UPS or USPS at the store) was mailing from FL to NJ:
(3) 20"x13"x6" flat style box weight 2.35 lbs./each (Vera weekender bag)
Ups: $27.47 USPS: $25.47
8"x8"x5" square box weight 2.75 lbs. (things for GD)
Ups: $19.97 USPS: $17.47
8x11 padded envelope weight 1.97 lbs (family pics & documents)
Ups: $13.77 USPS: $11.67
I asked the clerk several times are you calculating this right? She said the fees are based on the box size vs the weight. Plus, UPS charges a $5 fuel fee for each package. I obviously didn't mail thru UPS store.
I came home & calculated price at USPS.com based on size -- holy moly those prices were pretty much correct!
Most the time I mail to NJ in a "flat rate" box (up to 70 lbs. yet box only hold a few things & not deep) due to the pricing is better (even that jumped a few $$).
I'm shocked what shipping costs are. I only shop online with the free shipping option. What I'm mailing are the "great buys" to my cousins (VB weekender travel bags) but add in the shipping not so great a deal!
My husband said why don't you jump on plane for $49 and deliver them in person....I just might!!! Tomorrow I'll go to post office if still high I may be doing a quick vacay to see family!!!

@homedecor1 I was just thinking about this earlier. I mailed some documents to my cousin that I did not want to get damaged in a really large padded envelope (the dollar store did not have 8 1/2 x 11). I am thinking it was the next size up. The postage was $4.00. I could not believe it. There were only a total of 8 sheets. I saw the guy measuring the envelope and I think that is what got me. I sent it USPS regular mail. I agree with you, postage is really up there. The last time I ordered from QVC was in December. Returns is one of the reasons I don't shop here anymore. With Macy's, at least we have free returns.

Yesterday, I spent $450 at FedEx to ship 3 items from the East Coast to the West Coast. They had sentimental value, not monetary value, so I bit the bullet and paid up.
I routinely spend $20 or more to ship small packages to my granddaughters who live about 800 miles away. Shipping rates are so high now.

I ship everyday to my customers and anyone can set up a USPS dot com account to create and print your own labels.
There are discounts available to you if you do this which are not available at the post office counter, besides you don't have to wait in line, just drop them off and go.
Also, you can order usps boxes from them directly, meaning sizes and NON FLAT rate which are hardly available at the PO. The PO wants you to use their boxes, of course, they are mostly flat rate and those are pretty high rates for something light.
Also, you can view online, using what box gives you the price so you can compare, generally box A and box B are the economical way to go but you need to order those.
A flat rate envelope although is sometimes a good thing, I assumed you needed to only put items which are flat in a flat rate envelope, took me a couple months to embrace that it's not true. The envelope contents can be like a bottle of shampoo but as long as it covers the item, so you literally can put a bottle of shampoo in the envelope, roll it around the bottle and get that rate. Hope I'm not confusing anyone.
UPS stores:
There is an adder fee they charge (that's how they stay in business), you are paying for it. If you have a local UPS distribution center near, it's actually cheaper to ship it out of there. The UPS store however is convenient, they do have supplies, pack and ship but that all comes with a price.
If you are shipping UPS, generally box size plays a big role, today I sent a 25# shipment one state over in a 12x12x24 box, the actually billing weight is 39# even though there was only 25# of product in it.
Yes, rates are high and I know UPS gives its' business customers volume discounts, the rates the Q charges and HSN charges for returns are terrific if it's bulky and heavy, if it's lightweight, maybe priority mail is the way to go with a smaller envelope or box.
Do priority mail but I would actually consider folding those weekender bags in half and repackaging, I'm sure it won't hurt the bag but cut your box size down. OR....have them mailed Third Class box rate, they won't get there in 2 days if you don't care.
I would look into a priority mail flat rate envelope available at the post office and repackage the pics or just mail regular 1st class postage, tell them no priority mail, that will cut down on the dollars spent.
It's crazy I know, I can't believe so many companies are offering free shipping because somebody has to pay for it and overall its being absorbed into the price.

I quit sending GK birthday packages. Now I send a card with cash tucked inside, in a bubble envelope. Just got too expensive, I have a bunch of GK's.

that is what I did. I have usps.com and hated to smoosh bags into medium flat rate box. Then I looked online and just saw if I mailed them "retail" only available going to PO the estimated charge $9.73/box for bags. And $5.21 for small box, $4.79 envelope.
i do flat rate box and give to my postal carrier. They always arrive on time yet going from our PO it's 4-5 days (normally stuck in Kearney, NJ distribution center).
If if I find these prices were calculated wrong on my behalf I've decided to ind wrap and put in one box mail to my son and he can deliver them (they are bday gifts for 6/18 and end of June). He sees them...and one of them will happily stop by to get them & visit!
Sunday 10:30 pm I placed order thru Macy's.com - free shipping & 20% off (Fiesta ware pieces for DIL bday) they arrived Tuesday morning at her house!
Unfortunately, VB does not offer free shipping until $75 but won't ship individually. They charge $5 for gift packaging. Although, They did have a free shipping any order last weekend but the weekenders were $35 more than the outlet. Guess this is the trade-off!

yes us too! This was a special occasion they are all celebrating 60th bday - we travel a lot together so I got them weekender VB bags & cute 60th things. I hadn't planned on seeing them until my bday end of July.
Normally, I ship things from store directly to GD as carters, Oshkosh, Macy's & more have free shipping. One place I find good deals for kids clothes is Kohls but they charge a lot to ship - those things I save until I go to NJ which is often.

Shipping prices are crazy. I used to ship USPS when I had a box, but I switched to FEDEX. UPS is 30 miles away unless I use the UPS store, so I don't use UPS. FEDEX is fine. I used to spend about $18 to send a big box. Now a days it's more like $30. I need to send a couple boxes this weekend. I'm already dreading it. The bill is going to be high. I should have known better and had some things shipped directly.

You can also ship packages at Staples - they'll quote both UPS and USPS. I don't know if there's a Staples advantage vs The UPS Store. Seems like The UPS Store would be biased toward UPS.
I thought the UPS fuel surcharge was 4% to 5%, adjusted weekly, rather than a flat $5 per package?
I can understand why shipping costs would be so high - so much of their costs are in labor and benefits, though I think sorting operations would be largely automated.

update : I did end shipping my boxes today thru Post Office.
The clerk put in weight & dimensions for the large boxes - $17.45/each😳 But as someone here posted I get a nice break at usps.com for "flat rate" box and the clerk suggested reboxing in one of them.
I really didn't want to but I carefully folded the ends of each weekender & smoosh them into medium flat rate box. They were $13.60/each
I did my GD box at the po as it was only 1.37 difference regular vs priority. The clerk said I didn't need to redo that box it just went priority $11.77.
the padded envelope ended up $7.09.
so I'm glad the mailing is done but geez I could have bought the "grand traveler" by VB I've had my eye for the postage fees!!! Lol
