Some experts consider the HSP closely related to also having a BPD (borderline personality disorder). I agree and have no sympathy for them at all.

Perhaps that is why the state of mental health care in this country is woefully lacking.

I recently watched a program that stated there used to be millions of beds in institutes that specialize in mental health ... Now there are so many less that many who SHOULD be helped end up in prison...{#emotions_dlg.crying}

The closing of mental health facilities and the marginalization of those who need mental health care in this country is shameful. I read recently that the prison system is now the largest mental health care system in the USA. That's so ineffective and archaic.

Hi dooBdoo... Just wanted to let you know I used the Ignore User feature on a couple of people the other day, and it has worked wonders! I started posting in the beginning of this thread but quickly realized it was not where I should be. I came back and read all of the subsequent posts and wanted to thank you, Reese2, JuJu Squeezie, and a couple of other posters (I'm sorry for not specifying names-it's a long thread) for being so thoughtful in your posts. This person may very well have a type of mental illness judging from the "summary" of points in the book, but for some people, there is little to no sympathy for that. I've had the experience of dealing with people in my own life who do not want to acknowledge mental illness, don't want to understand anything about it, and don't make any effort to understand.

This thread has made up my mind to add a couple more posters to my Ignore Users... it keeps my blood pressure down! Thanks again. {#emotions_dlg.blushing}

I'm a little curious too about what accommodations this woman has made herself. She may well be a highly sensitive person or she may have just become so accustomed to being alone that someone else in the office is a distraction to her. What has she herself done in an attempt to ignore the distraction, the "noise", etc.? Why does it seem that Beanie is the one who has to read the book and make adjustments?

You would think that surviving this long (?) in the work force that she would have learned how to adapt to some things rather than forcing others to adapt to her.

I know I am highly sensitive to noise when I'm trying to concentrate. I've been this way as far back as junior high. In order to do my homework or study for a test I had to block out all the noises in the house-including the tv that was on at the other end of the house. The silence of my room seemed to amplify every noise. My solution was to wash my hair, get it in rollers and put on the bonnet hair dryer. Once my hair was dry I put it on the cool setting and continued to study. This was particularly effective while in a college dorm and later an apartment. To this day I can't concentrate when surrounded by noises.

So if office noise is a problem for her then she needs to investigate noise reducing headphones.

I have to say that I did learn how to tune out others, so I could concentrate and often times was so good at it that others could be standing right next to me talking and I would not know that they were talking to me. If they said my name and loudly, then yes. Otherwise, they were just part of the background noise and my inability to stop what I was doing actually got me into hot water a couple times where I was accused of ignoring people. Unbelievable and quite annoying to say the least, when all I was trying to do was complete my work. I can be extremely focused although at home am easily distracted by the tv and animals.

I don't think that's on the autism spectrum at all.

I know someone like this. She's actually a good friend of mine. She's not autistic.

Re: Highly sensitive person...this is a real personality trait

Seems to me there are probably degrees of sensitivity along with sensitivities related to certain particulars in a persons life. I am not a sensitive person, but someone hit the wrong nerve on a certain thing or issue?

I agree, way too many. I used to be in HR management, and we changed our benefits plans. The mental health coverage went from 50% for as many visits as necessary during a year, to a maximum of 20 visits per year. We were all in a meeting one day re the new benefit plans (HR and the Benefits Dept), and someone asked the question, what happens when someone uses up their 20 visits? The Benefits Manager, a man for whom I had no professional respect anyway, answered with "Oh, it's well known, when they use it up, then all of a sudden they're better."

I almost blew a gasket...

And I've had some of the same feelings reading some of these posts... {#emotions_dlg.crying}

I never said there was anything wrong with being Autistic.

The way I read your post made me believe you thought these HSP were autistic.
