Even if they dont dispense so called Killer Drugs they certainly can give you RX for 600 or 800 mg Ibuprofen.

Why would you need a prescription for ibuprofen? it's OTC and if you can add, you can figure out a 600 or 800 mg dose.

It is cheaper to get ibuprofen by prescription.  I only pay five dollars for a prescription.  I would have to pay much more if I purchased it over the counter.

Rules and regulations are different each state.  Here in California. Narcotic Pain drugs are hard to get. Especially, oxy, norco and such.   You need to meet requirements.  most dentists I have seen I personally have never needed any pain killers.  I am allergic to all NSAIDS so it makes it hard. My friends and family have gotten narcotics from Dentists.maybe Smoochy misunderstood   They do try high dose, like 800 mg Motrin in some cases, not narcotics first.

here in California some Primary drs can give long term , maintanence pain killers. Others they send to Pain Management drs.  You should not have to suffer with dental pain. Glad your other doctor was able to help

@shoekitty I am in CA & my dentist recently prescribed me hydrocodone for pain requiring a root canal.

There were 12 pills in the bottle but I only took 2 because they didn't really help much with the pain.  I got more relief from some naproxen 500 mg that I had on hand.

@lgfan  tried I was told by a nurse that the high dose 600-800 was not only cheaper, but taking more pills, had more additives in it, and it was easier on stomach to take one dose pill but only when needed as they are hard on kidneys.  I can't take NSAIDS at all which is hard. I know they work best for inflamation pain

@catter70   I too had dry socket with a wisdom tooth extracted and you are so right !   Unbearable pain !!!   Way worse then a bad toothache !   I've had an abscess tooth that wasn't as painful !

Re: Have you run into this with a dentist

I beileve it's that he doesn't want the responsibility of prescribing meds .   I had ophthalmologist at one time who  performed an minor eye surgery .   After I got home I was very nauseated called his office and he wouldn't perscribe anything for it even though I was vomiting and that was hurting my eye ,  he said I needed to call my primary for a prescription!   I wasn't happy about that it was the beginning of the end with him.   Found another ophthalmologist who I absolutely love !

if a dentist , doctor isnt able to perscribe meds to patients when needed get another dr

An antibiotic isn't the same as pain meds (especially narcotics).

@Shelbelle  yes even 600 or 800 mg of ibuprofen would have helped.

@drizzellla my husband said that too-about their insurance rates.

I have a seven yr relationship with my Internist (my PCP) He does know me well and knows that I am not a "drug seeker"  my dentist is much less familiar with me. He seems like a good guy, very caring. Was super attentive during the procedures, making sure I wasn't in pain and gave me a couple of breaks.

Interesting to note- I had nitrous oxide in addition to the lidocaine shots. Some dental offices won't offer it any more, again, due to liability issues.

None of this would be happening if substance abusers hadn't taInted the pain relief protocols for those who have legitimate needs. The ppl who go to the ER and say they're in pain, it's  10/10, and they're "allergic" to OTCs and can only take dilaudid 😉🙄🙄

@smoochy If you filled out a medical form indicating your PCP is prescribing a pain medicine or you told him then your dentist cannot.

My husband was prescribed a pain medicine by our PCP for a long time but since a pain patch is now needed in addition to oral pain meds and his neurostimulator is also implanted only the pain specialist can handle all his pain management.

It's also an issue of your insurance flagging claims for pain meds from multiple doctors. It doesn't matter if the meds are different.

I will say, however, liability, lawsuits, and major changes in prescription laws outweigh those "abusers". People can become addicted through no fault of their own - from "nice" people to street people.

I haven't read this whole thread but today the restrictions greatly help curb some of the overprescibing, addiction, and deaths.

Be well.
