Have you run into this with a dentist

so on Friday the 13thđź’€ I was in the dentist chair for three hours, getting a front tooth pulled and three adjacent teeth prepared for a bridge. I left with a temporary bridge. Still numb of course. But when that wore off, hoo boy did I have some pain. And a bit of swelling. I suffered all weekend taking OTC meds without much relief. Missed church yesterday and Bible study this a.m.  called dental office about getting something prescribed. Was told neither of the two dentists are licensed to prescribe meds except for antibiotics. What the what?

I contacted my primary doctor who helped me out by ordering a few percocet. He understands.

Dentists do a lot of very painful procedures.

Is this something new?

I have been to dentists' offices and they can prescribe painkillers.  I had a root canal and was prescribed antibiotics and ibuprofin.

I went to an oral surgeon to have a tooth pulled and subsquent dental implant.  He prescribed 800 mg Motrin and codeine.  Fortunately. I was not in that much pain and didn't have to take much of either.

Maybe your dental office lost their privilege to prescribe pain medication due to something that happened.

Many years ago I had my wisdon teeth pulled and got dry socket. Unbearable. I think I took all my pain meds in 2 days and had to get more. Was in pain for 10 days.

Re: Have you run into this with a dentist

Not in my experience...this isn't new.My BIL was a career pharmaceutical sales rep (Pfizer)

I had a complaint/question about the abrupt change in philosophy concerning pan meds by the medical community?

He then named off several well-known pharmacies and said that the FDA had come to town to shut them down! And this was because of the problem during the Opiod epidemic.

One of my doctors dropped me as a patient bcause I required lots of pain meds for my migraines.

Then last summer I had an abscessed tooth...I was steered away from any pain meds...and toward Advil Dual Advantage instead!

So, I’m sorry you are having to deal with it too.💔

Dentists especially those who extract teeth for sure write RX and it usually is standard procedure to send you home after an extraction with a RX for serious pain meds, even if you end up not needing them. You should never had to go thru the suffering you did.  Report this office to the ADA. I would not go back there,

@lgfan   I had a procedure done with my dentist that left me in a lot of pain and he prescribed Tramadol if the OTC Tylenol wasn't sufficient.

I've not needed to have my dentist prescribe an opioid for a long while but I believe that they can still do so. Things in this area are changing so rapidly, I would call the office and ask about it. There is no reason for you to suffer.

Re: Have you run into this with a dentist

I have had a lot of painful dental work in my life and have never run into this.  If this was indeed the case, then the dentist should have informed you of this beforehand so you could have been prepared.
