yes. A lot of people live in states where the next state is only a few minutes away!! lol - I can get to RI quicker than downtown Boston on some days! haha

When I lived in California, you could travel for 6 hours and still be in California, so people did do longer driving. Also, on the eastern side, we have tons of toll roads to pay for when traveling thru states. I pay a toll in MA, NY, OH. I don't think PA has one where I travel thru, but I could be mistaken

California has very few toll roads - that is why they are called "freeways" - which always confuses my friends out here in MA when I call highways, freeways.

I've never experienced what OP mentioned, but I can relate to what esmerlda said.

Yes, often when I was traveling to work and I believe I was probably thinking about the day ahead. Thankfully I always arrived safely!

Eeek. Yes. I did it twice this summer on the drive to work. Noticed I missed my street and had to wrap around and go the back way to work. Couldn't tell you what I was thinking about, but I drove safely. (people use their horns generously if you aren't on top of things). I'd like to visit that state of mind more often -- wasn't feeling any pain when I zoned outCool

Don't drive anymore but when I did that would be a NO. I had enough trouble concentrating with people on the roads who don't know how to drive! lol. And I never heard of this until now. So maybe that's a reason why most people don't know how to drive, theyre in another world! lol

No, I can't say that I have and I've driven a lot over the years, still do. I think if it happened to me it would be some sort of wake-up call (no pun intended) to change my driving habits or perhaps even talk to my doctor about it. The roads are hazardous enough when we're alert and attentive ... the idea it's normal to zone out is scary.{#emotions_dlg.unsure}

That would have been my reaction, too.

It's nothing for most of us in this area to drive to LA, about 700 miles or 7 hours, in one shift. I've driven from here to Vancouver several times, also.

I've asked friends on the East Coast why they don't' travel to visit other states often, it doesn't seem to be as common as long distance travel is for those of us on the West Coast.

Whew. Thanks, glad it's not just me who thinks this way. I drove a lot more when living and working in Texas and supporting hospitals in that state and 5 surrounding states. I hate to think many are driving without being completely alert and aware of surroundings. Gosh, what happens in split second can be life changing (or life ending).

Yes, indeed I have. I think it's quite common. Our minds just go into automatic pilot mode. I must admit, it always frightens me.

It happened to me driving to work the same route for 23 years....I would daydream the whole way and just end up at work. Like automatic driving.
