Re: Has anyone used Homeadvisor? What was your experience?

I would get on Nextdoor and find a referral there. Homeadvisor and the other referral websites don't have the best reputations.

My sister and husband used Thumbtack to find a landscaper to do their backyard. At the time Thumbtack stated on their website that they guaranteed their referrals with insurance.  The guy they hired ended up scamming them of $9000 and Thumbtack said that was not on them.

I've had great luck on Nextdoor for everything from an electrician to a chiropractor.

@Mindy D Bad experience...I do not believe Home Advisor interviews anyone they sponsor....i think anyone can call and get thier business approved by Home Advisor.  After a horrible job they did on removing leaves from my yard in the Fall, they too called me back to determine a time for hext fall to get the job done.  I  explained to them that I neve would deal with them again and not to call me.  Instead of paying attention to the job they did on my lawn the head worker went from house to house on my street offering leaf removal.

@tobes @I think HA is getting a hard time getting contractors. I think they are now getting rip off contractors because the better contractors don't want to work with HA anymore. There are tons of complaints from contractors that say HA overcharges them, sends them bogus leads and rips them off. There was a recent class action suit by some of the contractors. I didn't find this out until after I booked appoint today. I was relying on past interactions I had with HA and Angies List. When I tried them before they supplied lists of contractors of all types in my area and I was able to contact them. I spoke with reliable people but they did not do the type of work I needed. One guy, a handyman, was so impressive that I've kept his number and I've called him about this issue. Unfortunately for me, he's involved in a six week project. HA and Angieslist are one company now, btw. The way they make their money is by charging contractors every week to be with them.

You all offer info on others - Rabbit - Next Door - but many of these are NOT available in all areas.

We have only what we have.   Obviously TX didn't even know what a shovel was.

So true! No Nextdoor here and no idea what Rabbit is?

I used HA to find a surveyor and arborist when I bought acreage and was happhy with both.

       @Mindy D

We have used Home Advisor for three different 'jobs', and each separate contractor(s) were excellent, on time, cleaned up any residual, and wore booty type protector over their shoes.

 1. To remove an older ( began leaking) water tank, installing a quality large one/w warranty.

 2. Complete rewiring for extra appliances throughout the lower recreation floor- Had to drill through our walls, then cleaned up, plastered over, doing an excellent job with painting for a no show of where they drilled.

 3. Installed all new kitchen facets and rewiring. Excellent job for all three.

 4. Referred us to a quality Central Air conditioner company, then use the same company for a new Central forced furnace & filter.

  * Each job, company was certified with each having a 3- 10 year warranty. We plan to use the same contractors that we had by name, if possible, in the event if needed.

Hope for the best with whatever.

Re: Has anyone used Homeadvisor? What was your experience?

Two women friends used one or the other - and had bad experiences. I would NEVER use these companies - as they have no idea about the people they are sending out to do the work - and they're charges are HIGH.

When I need service people, I go to nextdoor dot com and Yelp --- and have found many good people on there - who did a great job and didn't rip me off.

The problem with hiring a home improvement company is that they can easily open and close up shop.  Homeadvisor and others seem to refer companies like this, there is no vetting.  By me (where we have lots of new build neighborhoods) there's been a big problem with landscape companies paying the $50 fee to open an LLC.  Then some take off with the money without doing all the work and the homeowners have no recourse because the company closes and there's no way to recoup your losses.

I've used HomeAdvisor a few times.  Most of my experiences were positive.  The one issue I had was resolved quickly.

Re: Has anyone used Homeadvisor? What was your experience?

The contractor I am using now (found on Nextdoor) said he use to be with HomeAdvisor but had to quit.  He said it was a marketing company and all they are interested in is personal data.  Their rates for him were over the top and so went out on his own.  Now he is getting lots of referrals from NextDoor.
