Re: Has Anyone Had Surprise From A Genetic Report?

@Vivian   Yes, you can choose,

In the world today today you can identify anyway you want to and it is politically correct for people to accept it.

I used two different services. They agreed on everything but 8-10 percent of my genetic heritage. One place said it was Iberian Peninsula, i.e., Spain and Portugal. The other place said that same 8-10 percent was British Isles, i.e., England, Scotland, Wales, or Ireland. Can I choose? Clearly there’s a bit of guesswork involved.

@Vivian

There are some anthropologists who think the Welsh and some other previously thought Celts came over long ago from the Iberian region.

@FrostyBabe1  Here in PA People from German descent often call themselves Dutch.  They are called Pennsylvania Dutch.

The  Deitsch people were mostly immigrants from Germany and some from Switzerland.

It can get really confusing for sure.  Do you have any connections to Pennsylvania?

No, none at all. When I say Dutch, I mean from the Netherlands.

Re: Has Anyone Had Surprise From A Genetic Report?

`No, my brother and I came out with same ethnic mix.  Percentages didn't vary very much.  We knew where our ancestors were the last several hundred years ... so no surprise there.

But before that ....

I was more interested in our "ancient origins" and the migration routes our ancestors took out of Africa, across the Middle East into Europe with the "metal age invaders."   It all makes sense!

@ALRATIBA

23 & Me traces the matrilineal line to Africa and can tell us what region they were from.

They also report the number of Neanderthal variants someone may have.

@Noel7 Yes. I had always been told that I had a lot of German in me as that’s where my grandfather came from. Turns out that I’m 99.3% exclusively from the UK (England and Ireland).

We did Family Finder at Family Tree DNA.  We had our mitochondral and Y DNA testing done there some years ago and went back there for our FF.   Father's Y DNA is one of the main European groups.

My mtDNA is V8 ... which dates back only about 6,000 years and "they" aren't sure exactly where the mutation occurred.  Maybe Middle East.  It's a mutation from V ... a mutation from HVO ... it's a complicated genetic journey.

Our earliest link is to Egypt during the age of hunter gathers.
