Re: Has Anyone Had Surprise From A Genetic Report?

My DNA came back as expected Greek and Swedish in equal amouts. My gal friends always believed she was 100% Irish, but found out she is 50% Irish and 50% English.

Oh, yes, you are lucky to have a brother for a test. @goldensrbest

My daughter gave us kits as a Christmas gift.  I’m so glad she gets to know her father’s genetics.

Slightly OT but I read this morning that as we age our fingerprints are no longer easily identifiable.  I may take up a life of crime.

I thought I would never get the medical report but DH and I decided to go for it in case it could be important for our daughter.

Kinda sorta. I've always had "you're Dutch" pounded in to my head from the time I was small. There's nothing wrong with that, but I began to suspect otherwise several years ago. The "Dutch" last names in my family could also be Flemish, German or Belgian.

I did the Ancestry test about a year ago. I'm not Dutch. The largest finding was Scandinavian, followed by pretty equal amounts of assorted western European (which could include Dutch, but also German, French and Belgian), British and Irish.

My sister had a snit fit when I showed her the results. She said "well maybe you're not Dutch, but I am". Ummmm, okay, but we had the same parents.

Re: Has Anyone Had Surprise From A Genetic Report?

What I find so surprising is how many people think that their DNA results would be the same as their brother or sister's. Each person inherits different things from their parents otherwise you would look identical and have identical traits and that is absolutely not the case.

So I inherited different DNA than my sister did, she is 70% Scandinavian and I am only 30% and there's no doubt our parents are the same.

@Bhvbum Wow I didn't know that.  I thought my brother and I would test the same. I learn something here just about every day.

[ Edited ]

My 91 year old dad and I did 23&Me together a few months ago.

A bit of Flemish from my Mom was a surprise,

not the Scottish, I knew about the Mediterranean French, Welsh, Eastern European, and Native American on my Dad’s side, but it was good to see it confirmed.  We always wondered about Jewish & there it was - 2%, know nothing of the history of it.

We enjoyed looking it all up, I was teasing him that maybe he wasn’t really my dad, but he sure is.  Glad we were able to do it, so Blessed he’s here.

Re: Has Anyone Had Surprise From A Genetic Report?

@FrostyBabe1  Here in PA People from German descent often call themselves Dutch.  They are called Pennsylvania Dutch.

The  Deitsch people were mostly immigrants from Germany and some from Switzerland.

It can get really confusing for sure.  Do you have any connections to Pennsylvania?

Re: Has Anyone Had Surprise From A Genetic Report?

I used two different services. They agreed on everything but 8-10 percent of my genetic heritage. One place said it was Iberian Peninsula, i.e., Spain and Portugal. The other place said that same 8-10 percent was British Isles, i.e., England, Scotland, Wales, or Ireland. Can I choose? Clearly there’s a bit of guesswork involved.
