Hee @Spurt  I am happy to say while germs are not a major concern for me personally my cooking is suspect but I have managed to not infect myself with goodness knows what these days (please know my heart breaks for those with compromised/weak immune systems as I have a friend that if someone coughs two towns away those germs are like a heat seeking missile to her in no time).  How goes it my friend, hope all is well!  Smiley Very Happy

I know the FDA says there really isn't a need to use an antibacterial soap (Dial, Dove, Safeguard, etc.) but I still prefer the antibacterial soap (Dial) as an extra precaution.

@SharkE  I never really gave it much thought as I figured whatever was on boxes/bottles/cans was still there when I got home (good news, I have seen several reports that this and other viruses do not live long on surfaces such as cardboard and most illnesses are transmitted via airborne particles) but again it made me stop and think and from now on I will wash my hands before and after coming home from grocery shopping.

It's on the handles of grocery carts I worry about. People snot around and cough and their kids to the same. I've seen people put their dogs in there where you put down that compartment to put your purse in.

Nope, not this gal, gloves for little shark. I have to take off the right one for the cashier and handling of the change back, but, that's why when I get in car I make sure I don't swipe at my nose, eyes, etc. Wait till get home and I get to the sink let hubby unload the back seat. If I have an itch while in car I keep a rag in the car to use to scratch with. Also, have those pop up germ killer wet things in side compartment of car. In church, I wait till all the hand shaking is done and use Purell if I forget to put my gloves on. Just wait till things settle then discreetly me and DH both start squirting Purell LOL

Shark hasn't had a cold in I can't remember. It's hard, I know, but, I can be trained. LOL

I'm using a brush for under my nails too, although I've used it, I never did for regular hand washing, meaning every single time. I heard a doctor on TV say that it wasn't the soap or the water but rather the scrubbing. I wash my hands a lot because I have that habit of touching my face.

@wishmoon, just to clarify this, it really takes all 3: soap, water, scrubbing to do effective handwashing. I guess the doctor's thought is that it is hard to scrub without soap or water, but just want to clarify that.

When I had nursing students and we taught handwashing techniques in the early middle school years we always did a demonstration that illustrated this:

The group was divided into 3 groups, but individuals in all 3 groups had cinnamon sprinkled heavily on both surfaces of both hands.  One group then had to wash their hands with just water and use paper towels to dry.  Second group used soap and water using correct techniques and dried their hands on paper towels.  Third group used wet paper towels to just wipe their hands and then dry on a clean paper towel.

The trick that people don't think about is that our hands have natural oils & soap reduces surface tension that allows for scrubbing and removal of substances from the hands.  If you don't use soap, the natural oil of the skin causes substances to remain on the hands.

Cleaniest group always was the group that used soap and water using correct technique.  Reason:  soap reduces surface tension so that all the cinnamon clinging to the skin due to natural oils of the skin can be washed away.

And of course, the "worst" group were the ones using just a wet paper towel to wipe their hands.  Rubbing and wiping will remove some, but you don't get the effect you do when using both soap and water.

With elementary school students we used Glo Germ and the kids loved doing those demonstrations!   But same principle:  correct technique, soap and water are all necessary to get the cleaniest hands.

whose just been certified because they are humming “The Happy Birthday Song” sing twice through!

Soap, thoroughly, rapidly running water, and Cinnamon !

If in public bathroom, take your damp towel with you, use it to open door knob, or handle.

Re: Hand-Washing: 20 Seconds⏱

I've been hearing that all my life....and I'm almost 60..LOL  I remember being in Health Class in elementary school and seeing that chart.   If people actually did it, we would not have the spread of colds and flu that we have now.  Honestly.  Why are people acting like COVID 19 is the plague?  It's a flu virus and it acts like any other flu virus, transmission is just like any other cold and flu virus.  There's no vaccine yet but we all know from flu vaccines that a big percentage of the population won't get the vaccine.  So, people are going to get it but many won't have symptoms, many will just feel like they have sniffles for a couple of days and some will have flu systems for 3-5 days.  Just like the flu that's been going around all winter.  The real risk is to the very elderly and those with respiratory illnesses.  Unlike the flu, babies and children seem to have lower risk of contracting  COVID 19 than they do with the flu.  Yes, wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds to prevent a colds, flu, gastroenteritis, conjunctivitis and a lot of other things that transmitted through contact.
