Halloween UNICEF boxes

This came up on another board. Some of us had never heard of them. UNICEF's website says it started in Philadelphia in the 1950s but later went nationwide; I don't think it's entirely nationwide.

Who has heard of these boxes, and who hasn't? (and where do you live?)

I'm in Seattle.
