Some in our area have closed.  I haven't been in one in years.  Who can or who wants to pay $5 or $6+ for a card.  They put themselves out of business.

We really don't exchange cards in our family anymore.  If it's a special occassion, gifts are usually involved.  It took me the longest time to convince my daughter to stop spending money on greeting cards for us.  I think it made her feel guilty, lol.  I told her that if she had money to burn, I'd rather have 1/4 pound of my favorite chocolate.  Smiley Wink

The grandchildren like getting cards, and I get those at the Dollar Store for .50 each.

@OnlyShopsOnline- since you said you haven't been in one in years, maybe you should give them another try.  They have many reasonably priced cards there now.  Some expensive, some inexpensive (99 cents or $1) and in between.

As for your statement, I can pay $5 or $6 per card.  Sometimes I choose to do that and sometimes I head to the $1 section.  Just depends on the occasion and my mood.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Re: Hallmark stores closing

[ Edited ]

Several of our Hallmark stores closed.  We have one left and I hope it stays in business.    Cards can be found in a variety of places so I don’t go out my way to go to Hallmark for cards.  However, it’s a nice place to find gifts.  I was there recently and found the perfect gift for someone.

End of an era. Less greeting cards are sent in general. Texting, social media, email, instant messaging seem to have crowded out cards. Found memories of REAL cards received.

I really think some of this goes directly back to the prices of cards.  Once the prices hit 6,7 or 8 dollars a card, I slowed down buying them for the most part.  This is mostly Hallmark pricing from what I've seen but those prices are ridiculous.  Walmart supposedly discounts their Hallmark cards.

I do shop at my local Hallmark store for wrapping paper, etc. and would miss it if it was closed.

I told all of my friends years ago to stop sending cards.I don’t like throwing 5 plus dollars in the trash can and I prefer to save a tree where possible.I like a call, text or email much better.I don’t get or give cards anymore.I will sometimes send a few dollars in a 50 cent card from dollar tree to my son but only rarely.

When my Grandmother died and my grandfather was going to go & live with my Uncle , my Mom and I were cleaning up and packing at his house.n In one of my Grandma's drawers we found a large box filled with cards she had received over the years - many with cash in  them. We collected all the cash and to our great surprise - there was a little over $16,000 in cash there.

@151949 I can’t believe that your grandma just left all of that cash in those cards.I wonder what she thought about when she made that decision.Good thing you went through those cards or that would have truly been “cash in the trash”

@Meowingkitty, I agree with you. Keepsake ornaments are now just like like the generic, plastic, mass produced ornaments you can buy at any discount store for way less money. The thrill is gone for me and I've moved away from that look.

@dex Boy, you are right. I was just curious so I started to look at who the cards were from  and imagine my surprise when I found money in them. She had a son who was quite wealthy and very generous who would send her $500 in some of them. He said he always sent a check - so she must have cashed the checks & put the money back into the cards.I guess it was her rainy day fund. Imagine how glad Grandpa was when we showed it to him.
