Re: HGTV Property Brothers Rant

My DH hung 2 of the old cabinets in the basement laundry room, and 4 in the garage. The remainder were stripped, painted and hung in his home office for desparetly needed storage. The cabinet bases were taken by one of the construction guys as were the old countertops for his hunting/fishing cabin.

It's not only the way they sledgehammer the cabinets; it's the way they rehab older homes.  Instead of respecting the style and charm of an older home, they gut the interior and turn it into a cookie cutter house.  I much prefer Rehab Addict.

Re: HGTV Property Brothers Rant

I have only watched a few of these shows.  I sort of get a little sad and miffed when they destroy old, solid wood cabinets that still look good.  Can't they refinish them, change the configuration and get new handles?  I can see when they are old, unsightly and battered, but sometimes they take really nice and newer cabinets and then put in these cheap IKEA cabinets. I saw a show with solid wood cabinets that couldn't have been more than 10 years old.  Must have cost 50,000 at the time, they smashed them and put in these cheap cabinets.  I don't get it, but what do I know. What is the matter with people. I was watching Property Brothers yesterday. They were renovating a quality older home and redoing the kitchen. I haven't a problem with the new owners having the kitchen they like but why can't they remove the previous well made, solid wood cabinets without trashing them? Lots of people would want these period cabinets for a home they are trying to bring back to it's original style. Even if the cabinets are unattractive, people may want them for a garage or basement workshop, summer camp etc.

So instead of donating or selling the perfectly good cabinets, countertops, sinks etc. they trash them and fill up dumps.

Wasteful and environmentally irresponsible.

So what do you expect us to do about it?

If you feel that strongly about it, just make some comments on their social media pages ... or their websites.   There's nothing any of us can do about it.

My goodness ! Why so snarky Tinkrbl44 ??  She was nicely stating her thoughts on the matter. We use these threads for that purpose most often. As long as it is in good taste and harms no one, what is wrong with her comments ? I agree with her. Recycle, reuse, gift or whatever. Our landfills are a mess as it is.

I agree with you and it's not just the Property Brothers, it's all of them on HGTV

Re: HGTV Property Brothers Rant

When we redid our kitchen, 12 years ago, they took the whole kitchen out in about 4 hours and took everything out very carefully.  We put the cabinets in our garage.  Our neighbors recently redid their kitchen and donated their cabinets, so I do agree, if you don't want or need them, they can, in most cases, be donated.  I guess it's the "drama" for TV and it's a shame.

Uh, I wasn't being the least bit snarky .... it was a fair question.

If she really feels that strongly about the cabinet thing,  why not complain where it can actually do some good?

You must realize that it won't do any good complaining about it here.

That's why I don't watch those shows; they don't make any sense.

Re: HGTV Property Brothers Rant

my home was built in the 1960s. when we remodeled our kitchen maybe 15 years ago we put SOME of the old cabinets in the garage and let the remodelers do what they wanted with the rest of them. i didnt want them just sitting around. in the past year we have remodeled the garage and got ride of all of the old reused dark wood cabinets and went with all open wire racks, plastic bins, and open baskets. it makes it much easier to find items needed, see my supplies, and get rid of junk. the old cabinets were hauled away by the remodeler again.
