We also made our own costumes-nothing fancy.  No boxed costumes.

We also just used those plastic masks sometimes and sometimes just costume face makeup.

I do remember pillow cases and paper bags to collect our candy. No plastic pumpkins.  Nobody in our neighborhood used them, either.

Those were the days when the Hershey chocolate bars were a decent size along with most candy bars, too.

I still love Halloween.  I love making Halloween crafts and making up bags for the grandchildren, even with GS in college.  LOL

I do not carve pumpkins anymore but I remember roasting and salting the seeds.

So I still keep some traditions from my own childhood.

Never had good luck on Halloween:  One time, my mother made me a pretty angel costume.  It was a windy night, and one of my wings bent backwards and then blew away on Pleasant Street in Bridgeport, CT.  Never forgot that.

Candy-wise, I made out well.  I wasn't allowed to cross the street, but there were two and three family houses lined up on the block.

Costumes were made from what we could find at home.  We would go with friends and have pillowcases for our candy.  Popcorn balls were popular and some people gave pennies instead of candy.  If you got a nickel or dime, you were doing great!

I remember there was a big old, rundown Victorian style house located in a secluded, wooded area that we, as kids, called  haunted.  Every kid, big or small was afraid to go anywhere near the house, but we all had a scary story about it, with some kids saying a witch lived there. We would walk to school and this house could be seen in the distance on our walk.  I don't ever remember seeing anyone outside the house, but there was an old wreck of a car on the side of the house in the grass. Some kids said they would see a faint light on inside the house at night, while others said it was always dark.

I wonder if anyone actually lived in the house or if it was left vacant for some reason.

I lived in a very small development - only 3 streets.  When I was 9 or 10 my friends and I would go trick or treating twice.  I wore a costume that my mother made- I was a table, the Statue of Liberty, a friend and I were a pair of dice.  Then I would come home and change into an old costume from past years and go out for a second round of trick or treating. Anything to get more candy.

We had a couple of masks that we traded among us. School had a Halloween party but we did the minimum and just wore a mask. I know we got our masks at the five & dime store. I can remember a blonde princess, witch doctor, pirate and Yogi Bear. In fact, I just threw out an old fur coat that my brother added to his Yogi Bear costume. It belonged to a petite aunt and hung in my guest room closet for a long time.

@bronxgal1,

I have never heard of a place that didn't do costumes! Only in NY right? Very interesting!

One Halloween,  when I was a teenager, the doorbell rang and when we answered it, a brown bag was on fire on the porch.

I ran out to stomp on it and my Mother shouted "DON'T" it has dog poo in it.

She got water and put it out.

Not a heartwarming story, but I remember thinking how saavy I thought she was for knowing the trick.
