There's no way the government can force people to get a flu shot. Now, they could make it hard to resist by offering a tax cut or an extra deduction as you're going to need to dangle an awfully large carrot in front of my face, before I let you force me. {#emotions_dlg.glare}

Or make it a contingency issue like requiring vaccinations in order to attend a public school.

My news said it's hitting the people in their 30's because it's a repeat of the flu strain in the 40's & a lot of seniors are immune. I have never had a flu shot, have never had the flu & don't plan on getting one. My daughter had a very bad allergic reaction to one and was advised to never have another. There are reasons people don't get them.

All I know is that my DH, myself and our baby all had the swine flu in 1957, and it was terrible. I don't know if the shots were available at that time, if so, we didn't get them.

The government can make all the laws they want, but they have to be enforced. Are they going to have the "face mask" police to go around and make people wear them? As far as vaccinations in public schools they say they do need them, however, then there are the ones whose religion forbids them, etc., who are granted exceptions, which really burns me up. I say, let them stay the heck out of school then.

ShowMe, I just found out yesterday, by calling St. Louis County Health Dept. That's what I thought was the flu tearing its way through my family, was NOROVIRUS. I saw a news article on local Fox that the flu was becoming widespread in our area and that the superbug Norovirus was here too. The main difference between the 2 is that flu is usually upper respiratory and that Norovirus is gastrointestinal and it spreads rapidly and loves large groups.

There were about 20 family members together on Christmas Eve and so far only 4 have avoided this bug. It's symptoms don't last long, for the most part. Mine did, 5 days, due to the fact that I am "older", {#emotions_dlg.sneaky} according to the RN at the Health Dept. What was tough, was the fact that my son and his family had come home for Christmas for the first time in 14 years and my son and 3 grandsons were all affected by Norovirus. My DDIL didn't get it, thankfully. It his my son on the drive back to FL. He got sick in GA. and DDIL did the rest of the driving the next day.

I am glad to know though that my flu shot didn't fail me.

Everyone, Please take good care and stay warm, safe and well! Happy New Year to all!

Does the flu shot also help prevent against stomach flu?

No. Stomach "flu" (really a misnomer) is gastroenteritis (it's not influenza as such). The flu shot protects against influenza, which is respiratory and can also involve gastric upset.

The flu shot doesn't necessarily prevent the flu 100% of the time. I always get the flu vaccine and I ended up with some kind of flu during this past week. I got so weak and feverish that I ended up at my doctor's, a place I rarely go. She said the combo of high fever, chest congestion and coughing (no sniffles), and body aches meant it was definitely the flu but would probably be a milder case since I'd gotten the flu vaccine. It lasted for about 4 days and then suddenly (as suddenly as it started) I began to feel better. Other than a cough I feel great today (except I still feel weak). My doctor told me to call her right away if the fever comes back with a worsening of the cough. I guess one of the patterns they've seen is the flu followed by a couple of days of feeling better and then pneumonia hits. After feeling as lousy as I did I don't even want to THINK about feeling worse! The flu vaccine is something I will continue to get without fail.
