@Kachina624 , I grew up with evaporative coolers. My Daddy would change the pads out, and the house smelled so fresh. 

My grandparents had one, and they kept a window open in the dining area. The cool air would blow through the house. I will always remember how nice that was. 

I live in West TX, where there is very low humidity. The evaporative coolers work very well.

Generally, 75 here in N AL although I'll turn it up to 76 if I'm not busy and the air is blowing on me.  At night I turn it down to 71.

@Kachina624   I have a friend with a log cabin a couple miles away with an evaporative cooler. His place is always cool and feels great.  He talks about having to climb on the roof every season to service it to get it going. Do you have someone out to get it started each season?

This friend is climbing around 3 stories up, just too scary.

No whole house AC. Have an HVAC in our 4 season patio room. Don't use AC in here unless my wife is home. Since she is off Pet Sitting for a week, it was not, and will not be turned on. Today it was 92° in the room. With a ceiling turned fan on high, it was just fine for me and our 4 furry kids.

When she is home and the AC is turned on, it is set at 82°, and with the ceiling fan moving the air she is comfortable, and I am almost cold.

Set it at 74°?  I have never set any AC that low in any of the places I have lived. Too cold and those electric meters spin like crazy, adding up way too many $$$$.

@Jordan2  We keep our home at 70 all year round. 70 in summer AC is a just right temp for us.

70 in heat for the winter works out too.

Evaporated coolers work best in dry climates such as the west coast.  The east coast needs air conditioners due to humidity.  Running air conditioners can be quite expensive.  I set mine to 78 and use fans.

My house is a one story, 2100 sq. Feet.  I keep air conditioner set at 74 all the time.  It's cool in here.  I live in Atlanta so it gets really hot here.

@GenXmuse no I can't close the vents. It's a one bedroom apartment so I'll close my bedroom door when I'm in there to contain the cool temp. With central air the air is cooling off the living room and kitchen (also have a small room that is a closet), it seems like such a waste of money.

I keep my house at 77 but will go to 76 if it's really hot. I  keep the vents shut year-around for the rooms I don't use.

Amazon sells an assortment of vent covers that would block air from rooms you don't want to heat/cool and force air back to where you want it.  Or duct tape might do it.
