Definitely a scam.  Here's what to look for, and where to report it:

Below are five things scammers often do that the real IRS would never do:

The IRS will never:

  • Angrily demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
  • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have people arrested for not paying.
  • Demand that people pay taxes without giving them the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say is owed.
  • Require people to use a specific payment method for their taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

Here’s what people should do if they think they’re the target of an IRS impersonation scam:

  • Those who actually do owe taxes should call the IRS at 800.829.1040. IRS workers can help with a payment issue.
  • Those who know they don’t owe taxes, or do not immediately believe that they do, can report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 800.366.4484.
  • Those who have been targeted by any scam should be sure to contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their FTC Compliant Assistant at FTC.gov. Add the words “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments of the complaint.

For more information on reporting tax scams, go to IRS.gov and type “scam” in the search box.

Re: Getting recorded calls from irs

Bringing forward again for two reasons - 1) I've gotten 2 calls in the last 3 hours so they r out in full force and 2) last few years messages were laughable bc they were from very heavily accented men u could just barely understand but this year they have changed their tactics.

Now the calls are from what sounds more like a computer generated female voice. It is sounding more believable - I've done taxes in the past and we were putting out the word for years but the crooks are getting smarter so guessing they may snare more elderly with the newer message. I so wish there was an easier way to shut down these guys.

This is also why the Siri is a female voice and many GPS routing directions are in a female voice. People are less likely to be upset at a female voice and as you mentioned-- more believable and trustworthy.

Sick sick sick of phone calls- love the call blocking on my new Panasonic phones.  But the other evening I answered a new number, thick accened  fellow telling me my computer was sending out something bad, I said Hold on one second, legally I have to tell you you are being recorded, wait one minute..  Now this is being recorded, say whatever you want..    On the other end all I heard was "click"...  Why on earth can't something be done about all of these calls and why do people actually fall for them?

So glad I was finally able to get Nomorobo to work.  It has been awesome. The phone rings once and then that's it.

Re: Getting recorded calls from irs

I received the call and was in one of those moods, so I decided to call it back.  I said to the woman who answered that I received the call and was curious about what was happening.  She said I was in trouble with the IRS.  I calmly asked why.  And she got upset that I wasn't more concerned.  I said that I wanted information.  Then she yelled at me that I should be more upset and yet I sounded calm and she slammed up on me.  It was really funny.  I reported it on the IRS website.

Re: Getting recorded calls from irs

I got two messages the other day on my answering machine. They said they were "filing a lawsuit against me"????

It was pretty scary sounding even though I knew logically it was a scam.

I hope some unsuspecting folks don't fall for it.

I hope so, too. I especially worry about older seniors, who may not be aware of some of these scams. These scammers prey on people's fears, telling them horrible things will happen if they don't comply, like being arrested, and sued. That can really frighten a person. Cat Sad
