Re: Getting along at all levels...

I honestly believe if more women were in a position of power, heads of state, presidents, etc. We would not have these mostly ludicrous conflicts. We as women deal with conflict resolution scenarios on a daily basis. We can empathize, think logically, multitask, think for the future, ie consequences rather than impulsively for the short term...who other than a woman would send her children to war? A woman would only use that as a last resort after all other attempts have failed.

Too bad there isn't some sort of class in school teaching kids how to grow up and become good citizens !!

A little ""big picture"" thinking needs to be introduced into their thinking process ...

That is the job of the parents to do. Too bad they have failed miserably.

You don't need to put a woman in the white house to stop us from rushing to war, just institute national service like the jews have and we'll never see another war started unless we are attacked.

Human beings are frail, complicated...

So although I have hope, I'll always find animals to be the far-superior species. Their behavior is caused only by sheer survival.

Thankfully, there are many examples on the 'Net that restore my faith in humankind.

Re: Getting along at all levels...

If empathy (not just sympathy or compassion) for ALL living beings is taught first by every parent, hate won't exist.

But it's something that can never be realized, unfortunately. Children are born pure, innocent, and totally open-minded, only to have adults mess them up.

Re: Getting along at all levels...

I think the closer you get to the individual level, the whole empathize/sympathize/see it from another's pov is much more doable than many attempt to do. But what some don't seem to get is that if, for example I do see and understand your pov, it doesn't mean that I believe it to be right, or just, or moral. It means I can see where you get your belief, I can see why you believe what you do. But perhaps I can also see where that belief/practice/action might lead, and I see it as dangerous, immoral, illegal or whatever.

Am I to then, just not offer up and support what I believe to be right in this given area? Am I not to stand my ground for what I see as important/moral/legal/or protective of something or someone?

When the issues and divisions are things of little importance (cross town rivalry sports teams) we need to teach and enforce tolerance, and putting things into perspective. It is only a game. When it is bigger things, on a bigger (state, national, world) scale, and the stakes are much higher (equality, rights, security, survival), the waters get muddied. We aren't as connected as the closer relationships, there are more than one thing dividing us (the sports teams share a town, families, work places, etc., while there is so much more dividing us on the global level, like religion, language, culture, mores).

We, as humans, will never get everyone to cooperate. There will always be evil, and evil must be fought, and if in no other place, conflict will always exist there. Could we all do more to 'get along'? Yes. Will everyone? No.

And all conflict isn't hate. Many seem to want to frame it that way, but it simply isn't true. Dissension is often good and necessary for change as well as the maintenance/establishment of what is good and just and right.

Re: Getting along at all levels...

Thanks for your thoughts. I will say that it seems TO ME that the quality of parenting is going downhill. I say that because I started teaching over 40 years ago, and I feel irresponsible parents are multiplying fast! Manners, politeness, and all-around respect are not being taught at home. (Disclaimer....does NOT apply to all parents/families.) Friends still working in my school district say the school behavior is just terrible anymore, that I would be shocked how bad it is....(I've been retired 10 years.) This district would be considered small and rural. It is so disappointing. Maybe I'm getting into an off-topic area now, but I think it is all related in a twisted way.
