Re: Getting Called Baby By Strangers.

It depends how it is said. If it's in a salacious way, then yeahs but if an older person cause me baby, i don't mind since it's a common term of endearment in the south.

I'm glad I didn't make you mad. Wasn't my intention. Just woman to woman trying to warn you. Asian women just walking down the street are getting slugged in the streets.

I don't like being a push over, but, I'm alive and haven't had acid thrown in my face. Something else I've seen on the news. Her only sin was coming home from work and this boy came up to her and threw acid in her eyes just for the fun of it.

Worse, I've received is when I first moved to Tx. didn't know my way around yet and I didn't know which way to turn ---right or left? This man

hollered "Move it you old *itch" !!!

Brings to mind a song "welcome to the jungle".

Well, that certainly puts being called "baby" in a different perspective lol!

I hate people I don't know calling me baby, honey or sweetie.

Today I ran to a convenience store a couple miles from home. A bunch of guys were getting out of a truck with out of state plates.

I was deciding what I wanted while waiting for someone to check out in front of me. He left and another guy, probably 50 came up and I motioned for him to go ahead as he was holding several items.

I got, "go ahead baby, I have all day."  Baby?  I am 490 in dog years.

I should have gone Julia Sugarbaker on him but if his Mother couldn't teacher him manners I'm not wasting my breath.

Don’t take it too seriously or personally. In the south, some are raised hearing those terms of endearment and it isn’t meant as disrespect. DH had a receptionist years ago who was in her late 20’s. She always answered the phone and would say “okay, honey, one moment, etc. Regardless of who was callin g. Drove me nuts and DH would cringe if heard her calling men in their 60’s “honey”. He asked her not to do that but guess habits are hard to break.

Some people just use those terms in general conversation, and I don't really think it's meant to be offensive. Going "Julia Shoebaker" on someone isn't going to accomplish anything, except to maybe create more problems for yourself. Go with the flow, smile and move on. Why make a big deal out of it!

Re: Getting Called Baby By Strangers.

Women have called me "honey" almost as often as men.  Doesn't bother me in the least.

Re: Getting Called Baby By Strangers.

I think many of the terms being discussed can be traced back to where the "offending" person may be from.

We were having some work done in our home last week and the foreman was explaining something to me and at the end he said "MaMa."  I must have given him a perplexed look and he said "oh no...no disrespect..."MaMa" is a term of the utmost respect for women of a certain age in my country in Central America."

When my DH came in, he referred to him as "PaPa."

I learned something that day and was not offended in the least.

Re: Getting Called Baby By Strangers.

I was watching the TV show "Nightwatch" on A&E the other night, which follows EMT/paramedics for the City Of New Orleans & I noticed that they call most of the folks that they tend to, both male & female, "Baby".  Maybe, it's a Southern thing?
