Oh my mom's answer for us when saying we were bored..."Bored huh...well I can find something for you to do." That stopped that complaint in its tracks.
Morning scottie!
Sorry to hear some Mom's were not the most nurturing.
Regarding boredom, my mom would say "bored people are boring". So it always made me reflect on myself and not come across as a bore.

She also gave me the very strong message that being sick was a burden to other people and that it was absolutely not a situation for pampering or special attention. (Thankfully I only had the normal childhood things - measles, mumps, chickenpox, etc.)
While I certainly don't agree with her belief about sickness in toto, I have to say when I have had things like kidney stones (unimaginable pain), I didn't overreact and think I was dying or something. So maybe it was a good thing after all.
.
(((Dagna))), so sorry you went thru that as a child. IMO you do need a little special TLC when you're sick as a child.
I think so too. ((Dagna)), ((tansy)) et@
Hi nunya...are you my missing sister? Exactly...watch out for the swinging arms.

He also used to say..."check to see if the door's open before you break it down."
Love this second one as well. It makes so much sense, and I wish someone had said that to me when I was young, as I would have benefited from it greatly.

I love this! Great advice at any age!

Boy did my mom ever say this one over and over as well. I have tried to live it with my own child as well.

I believe real love is not mushy. It is "keeping it real" because the world is going to be tough on you, and a parent's job is to prepare you for it. In reality, some of them were said with kindness, but when needed, they were sharp.

My sweet mom used to say "If you like people, they will like you."
My own most famous line to my girls was "If you lie, your tongue will turn black." Whenever something happened I asked them to stick out their tongues. The one who wouldn't was the guilty one. You'd be surprised how long this worked. One has to be pretty tricky to stay ahead of four little girls all under five years old.

When my mother was careening drunkenly through life, ruining her children's lives and alienating her few friends, she would respond to any criticism of her with "If you don't like it, too dam bad!"
She lived to have those words come back and bite her in the *ss.

"Life isn't always fair."
"we're not made of money."
"I'm not running a restaurant!"
"I don't care what the other parents let their kids do!"
"if all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you?"
Just some of what I heard growing up.
