Not all Florida is predominantly elderly.  The town we live in has 5 high schools.  The mall is full of young people.  The restaurants are full of young people.  It isn't all about "early bird specials", etc.

I do agree that once you are acclimated to the warmer temps, it is very noticeable when it drops down.  We were in a "Tiki bar" on the water one night watching the sunset.  The bartender started to drop down the side flaps and turn on the overhead heaters because everyone was huddled up freezing.  When we got in our car to go home, we saw that the outside temperature was 70 degrees!  But then again, 20 degrees lower than what you are used to is going to make a big difference.

Thanks, tends2dogs!  I'm glad I am not the only one who sees Florida through the OP's eyes!

Just because she chose to live in a remote area that is largely a fishing village, she refuses to see that Florida is a progressive state and the elder population is less than 20% and most of those are in the Villages or Miami.

We have lots of days when you can be comfortable in shorts and Tshirt OR pants and long sleeved top.  Many of us like to seize the opportunity to wear more clothes in the Winter.  Boots are not any hotter than sneakers.  The difference between pants and capris will hardly keep you really cool on a hot day. 

Wear whatever you are comfortable in and enjoy Florida.  It is a beautiful place and very interesting!

Seniors who call florida their primary residence make up about 20% of Florida's population but the snowbirds - whose residence is elsewhere but who spend 6  months of the year in Florida make up 64% of the population durung that period.Then add that to the 20% and it is 84% of the population of the state. Quite a difference!!!!! Source - Sarasota County. Most of those who snowbird to Florida do own the home they snowbird to and do pay property  taxes in florida as well as their northern homes.source - my personal experience with my friends and neighbors. When a persons "primary residence" is not in Florida they do not count in the florida census, but they are there from Oct to Apr every year without fail.

i am fairly certain that it is going to surprise everypone to know that only Sarasota County has a high population of snowbirds and senior citizens in all of Florida.

@Zhills   VERY interesting facts. Living in that environment WOULD require getting used to the idiosyncrasies of elderly people, that is true.  Unfortunately, this misconception of Florida is widespread and would be even more so if you lived this particular county.

Citrus county - 58.3 % married SC and 15.6 % single SC

manatee county -52.7% married SC and 15% single SC

Lee county - 52.7 married SC and 25.4% single SC

and where the villiages are Sumpter Co 44.9% senior citizens. 

And again - this is census data and does not take those who spend the entire winters there every year but are residents elsewhere.
