Some folks like top loaders, others like front loaders.  Whatever gets the job done.

That's the one thing mine doesn't have.  I think we bought ours before they started this.  However, I have to say that I have not once had an issue where I needed to put something in after the washer has started so I don't miss this at all.

@Lipstickdiva Right.  Even after the "add garment" light goes out on mine I can still press "pause" and in 3 sec. the door unlocks.  Good safety feature, too, that the door cannot be opened automatically.

I've always owned a top loading washer -- and never had a problem. There are lots of complaints on line about front loaders --- mold, smelly, etc.

I read many years ago that stainless steel or enamel drums are the best.  Plastic drums had fishy odor problems as well as mold buildup.  Could be that they aren't making the type with plastic drums any longer.   I've always left my washer (and dryer) lids open to air out, after each use.  Mainly to prevent rust on the enamel drum, although I wouldn't want a mold buildup, either.
